GL Rating on Gear Oil for M

Hello All.

I know I need to do a gear oil change in the rear end of my M. There is/was water getting into to the rear end, that I think I finally got sealed up. (The tractor has lived outside for the past 10 years or so at least, before I bought it). I still want to put something around the shifter just to make sure it sheds the water, and I put some rubber washers under the bolts on the cover to seal that up tight.

The previous owner said he used to pull the oil out, and heat it up outside to boil the water off. I know this past winter, when I started the tractor up, it bogged when I let out the clutch until the ice broke free.... I wasnt a happy guy.

So needing to change this oil, does anyone know if what GL rating has to be on the gear oil? The owners manual just says 13 gallons of high quality 90wt gear oil. I didnt know if I could use a GL-1, or if I need to try and use GL-4 or 5, which seems like overkill.
I saw some 80-90 at Wally World for about $8 a gallon, but I was reading on this forum that some folks were able to buy the 5 gallons of GL-1 from NAPA for about 40 bucks a pail. I would rather buy the NAPA oil, and get it in pail form, but I dont know if GL-1 is OK.

Thanks in advance, and sorry for the long post.

~Bug

I picked up three pails of the NAPA GL-1 mineral oil this morning. Its still 39 bucks for 5 gallons, which is far cheaper than I was able to find the straight 90 weight anywhere else. (Advance Auto Parts still had a GL-5 for 33 bucks a pail)

Ill try to get things changed out tomorrow, but the county fair is in town, and the pulls are tomorrow, so that might distract me for a while.

e-manhunt, the guy that owned my machine before me used to drain out the old oil, run it through filter cloth, and then would heat it up outside to drive off the water. I dont advise the method, since you can scorch the oil or hurt yourself doing it, but I guess it would work if you had a good way to control the heat. But I guess it depends on what you want the oil for... You could always just skim off the top of it for use in your oil cans...

Here's a question: Is there any way to salvage the old gear oil? I took 10 gals. out when I replaced it earlier. Now that is has sat for a while and I presume the water is on the bottom of the buckets, can I siphon off the gear oil? Or is this too much fooling around ?

Thanks for all the replies everyone.

Bob, you gave me the sort of breakdown that I was looking for. I had read that I need to make sure the oil is "yellow metal" friendly, which some of the GL-4 and GL-5 oils are not, due to the EP additives.
I did find at Advance Auto Parts today five gallons of the Accel 80-90 gear oil for $33.33, but it was a GL-5 rated oil.
Since I dont want to swap out the rear end oil again for a while, Ill call NAPA and see the current pricing for the GL-1 oil. I believe the part number is 65-205 (based on other posts on the board)

Thanks again for all the input, Ill post back with how it goes!

I found the NAPA part number 65205 on their website. Says it is a GL-1 Mineral oil. Looks like it would work okay.

Last I checked Napa had GL1 and priced better than the GL5 which is more common now. WalMart used to carry, but I can no longer find it in my area. I purchased 5 gallons of GL1 for about $25, but that was about 5 years ago, and all oil prices have gone up since.

The M transmission contains only straight cut spur gears and single straight cut bevel set (differential drive gears). Consequently a GL1 rated lubricant is entirely adequate.

GL2 is OK too - it's essentially GL1 with some added rust/oxidation inhibitor.

GL3 and higher rated oils contain EP (extreme pressure) additives. These are intended for highly-loaded hypoid and spiral bevel gearing. These additives are unnecessary and may be actually harmful to the "stone age" transmission in an old tractor. (Some EP additives cause INCREASED friction and wear in low tooth pressure-loaded spur gearing such as is in your M)

Bottom line: Buy the cheap GL1. It's a far better lubricant than the best that was available back when your M gearing was designed!!

ejr: I believe he is asking about the GL rating of the lube, not the viscosity. I would like to know the answer to his question also. mike
