140 xmission oil leaking from axle housing-advice?

All the hytran in my transmission leaked out of a bottom hole in the right wheel axle housing under the platform. The hole is next to the transmission flange and looks like it's intended to do just what it's doing. Guess a seal is shot.

Can I replace the seal without pulling the transmission out by splitting at the transmission/axle flange? Should I replace other parts in addition? It's a '68 model and all else works well. Any advice appreciated.

Thanks.

Nawlens: When you say all the transmission fluid leaked out, alarm bells go up in my mind. There are only 3 places that would allow it all to drain out, those being drain plug, around pto or a cracked transmission case. Are you sure it'e empty?

I also side with Patricks thoughts, why are you using Hytran, it should have 90W gear oil or heavier. Secondly, if these tractors are being over filled with transmission oil, the excess will leak out. I'd try filling it to proper level with gear oil, maybe even a 1/2 quart over, and see what happens.

It's a lot of work to change those seals and bearings. If you don't have excessive noise and if axles are tight when you jack tractor, I would start with the oil change. I'm guessing I've been called in on 25 different tractors over the years, every case the transmission was over full. Both my Super A and 140 were leaking and over full when I bought them. I changed oil and filled to 1/2 quart over full with gear oil, they don't leak anymore. It's been 4 years on 140, SA, so long I can't remember, but I've never changed a seal or bearing yet.

All right, You all have me scratching my head.

My operators manual, pg 71, says to use Hy-Tran in the xmission, rear wheel housing, and touch control. Should I ignore this and switch to 90 wt gear oil?

It didn't all leak out. I just looked through the fill plug with a flashlight and could see a level, but it seemed pretty far down. Could you remind me which is the level plug? Manual says on the left side but all the bolts look the same. Is it the lower one furthest to the front? Seem to remember it was the second one up on the fender. Thanks in advance.

It seemed the gears were making too much noise, which is why I looked in the first place through the fill plug and couldn't see a level. Maybe there was a low level. I added 5 qts on top.

Nawlens: Just so you don't misunderstand me, stay with hytran in touch control, use gear oil in transmission and final drives.

Nawlens: The total capacity is only 5 quarts, and fill to level plug is on left just below front tip of left fender, usually behind the brake activation rod.

I know the newer manuals say hytran for transmission, however nothing changed in there since 1939, other than harder gears. As you know, 140s do not draw hydraulic oil from transmission as later larger tractors do, therefore gear oil is the way to go. Gear oil will make transmission quieter, will lubricate better and cause transmission gears to slow down faster after tractor has been idling in neutral.

Another thing I can tell you, having farmed all those years, before the days of hytran in transmissions, it was rare to see a tractor at the IH dealer shop with transmission or rear end opened up. Yes, the transmission reservoir did improve hydraulic function but I never figured hytran was a great friend of bearings or gears.

This is so true. I could barley get my tranny into first without grinding it a bit till I switched to 90 weight. That sucker was LOUD too!

Now it just slips into gears slick as snot and hums a little. :)

Just got back from a trip and read your replys. If the level plug is the one with the 5/16" socket just below the brake rod (left side), then there is way too much oil in there. Today I will drain it all out and put in 5 1/2 qts of gear lube. I won't even mess with the level plug because it looks like I'd have to disconnect the brake rod. If that works you guys have saved me a load of work. Thanks a lot!

For the record:

Drained ~7 qts of gunk out the xmission. About 1 qt of which was water!?? Don't know where the water came from. Filled with 85W-140 gear oil. Now it doesn't leak halaluya. Gears still make a whining sound, but at least I won't be spliting any flanges and replacing seals and bearings.
Thanks for all the expert advice.

You'll have to remove the housings to fix this. Get ready, this will not be a quick fix.

How come you are running Hytran in there anyway? try some 95-140W gear oil. Mine was dripping a bit too and it quit when I put that in it. Also made it run a bit quieter too. I'm sure yours is worn quite a bit too and I think this thicker stuff helps with the clearances.

Thanks Scotty and Red. Will do both.

Do you suggest replacing any bearings?

What are the shims for?

Check the bearings by rotating the inner race while you hold the bearing. If it feels rough while spinning or makes any noise I would replace them also. Water is an enemy of bearings and does them in ! The shims that are there, just put them back with the same amount on both sides, they were set up at the factory and that shouldnt change !

Mornin Nawleens Gator, Yes you can just remove the axle housing to replace the seal in the transmission case. Its a bit of work, your going to want to remove the rim/tire and any weights. Block the tractor with wooden blocks, and also wedge the front axle before removing anything. You may as well do both sides, one side at a time is easiest.
