Steering shaft bearing

Anyone ever try to take the slop out of the steering shaft center bearing - part #351126R12 on a Super C? I turned the shaft around to get a new spot on it, but the bearing is still sloppy. A new one is close to $100. (or does it even matter?)

Thanks

Thanks for your advice. I'll follow it.

Just to be specific, I am asking about the short horizontal steering shaft, with a split two-piece housing that bolts to the clutch housing (not the one up by the steering wheel). I suppose I could see clamping the two halves of that small housing together in a vise & reaming to accept a bushing, but that shaft has pressed/welded yokes from the factory, and I'd hate to mess with one of those just to slip a bushing on?

I was thinking of the other shaft. No issue with a split bushing, The bushing needs to be retained in the housing External snaprings on either end would work, a snap ring on one end and a flange constructed on the other when the bushing is turned, or flanges on both ends. JimN

JimN,

Just thought of something. The shaft has welded yokes on either end, no way to slide a bushing over. Is that some kind of a split bushing?

Thanks again

It could be, however the housing needs to be drilled/reamed for the bushing, thus the shaft needs to be out of it. Replacement yolks that pin to the shaft are available from Motion Industries (with help from the counter person) Then a traditional bushing works, JimN

It matters. A machine shop can bore it out and rebush it for a modest price. (shop it) the bushing should be oil impregnated, and fit to about .002 to .003" clearance, and have a drilling for the grease passage. JimN
