You can go and install an 8v but dont change anything it will stay charged those who tell you not probably havent seen one work or installed one either.

If you installed an 8 volt battery, you would need to readjust the voltage regulator upwards to about 9 to 9 1/2 volts. Otherwise, you would just charge it to 6 volts anyway.

is it possible the bad battery could make the amp gage show a discharge when the engine is running. jeeper

You can check your battery's charging voltage at the battery using a volt meter set on Dc voltage.
You should be seeing 7.25 volts.

If you decide to stay with the 6 volt battery you should have 00 battery cables no longer that necessary and clean all terminals until nice and shiny. Do the same thing where your battery is grounded and at the starter too. Hal

Its not hard to crank at all ,if it turns over 2or3 times its running. It just the fact that the battery is shot and it was not chargeing and i cant figer ot why. jeeper

I'm with Doug on this one. Six volts is plenty good for a tractor this size as long as the connections are good. If it's not cranking well on six, throwing more voltage to the starter is just a band-aid cure because somewhere down the road the bad connections/starter or the need for a tune up will come back to haunt.Jim

really a 6 volt is plenty for such a small motor. If u take the time to clean all your electrical connections and apply a small amount of something like no ox. Every connection on my sc was covered in green oxidation and after everything was cleaned up the motor turns great even in the winter.Much cheaper than a 12 volt conversion too.

That's the route I would go. There's been a lot of them converted so you should be able to get a lot of advice from these guys if you need it. Hal

I think some of the tractor owner's have used the 8 volt batteries. I don't know if your generator will keep it charged since a 6 volt generator output is around 7-7.25 volts. Somewhere in the 9 to 10 volt range to keep an 8 volt battery charged. Even a 12 volt batery needs around 14.5 volts to keep it charged. Hal

El toro' my meter shows 6.5volts at batt. with the engin running. my way of thinking is thats how many volts the gen is sending back to batt. my ? is if the batt. is no good and will not take a charge will the batt. show a discharge. jeeper

With the engine at 1/2 throttle or better you should be getting 7.25 volts at the battery. You should have around 6.5 volts without the engine running and the generator & regulator should be putting out 7.25 volts or close to that after you start using the tractor. Check the battery elecrolyte in each battery cell and compare the readings. It should be in the 1.250 range or better. The readings should be close to one another too. Hal
