Thanks for the input on my now-running carb installation! I will run it daily for the next week and let you know what happens. Now that I am sure this puppy is a runner, and since it is likely to get some serious drive time now, time has come to change the last of the fluids...namely the oil. I am going to take off the valve cover and clean all that gray goo from the upper surfaces. Might tidy up the rest in there if it is dirty but I don't recall it being terribly bad.

Two questions. Tractor will be run mostly in warm weather but sometimes in the winter just to keep new gas in the carb. What oil would be best? Synthetic or traditional? Detergent? I know this is asked often but I have a terrible time with the search on this site.

Second question. When the oil is drained, can I dump something into the fill spout rock it around and then drain the pan again to make sure I have it flushed out? The current oil was good enough to work on the engine but is dark. The tractor sat for a couple of years and I worry about sediment and other crud in the pan. Awful proud of this baby and would like to see good clean oil in her! Thanks guys!

A quality brand name 10w30 will work just fine in your tractor. third party image

DO NOT AND I MEAN DO NOT run detergent oil in your tractor if the engine has not been rebuilt recently because it will clean all the sludge out of the enigne and could clog up the oil pump. but if it is a new engine then go ahead and run detergent

The detergent vs non-detergent thing is a myth. Detergent oil is what we used in the 50's. Unless the tractor was owned by a no-nothing die-hard, the possibility of non detergent oil being in it is ziltch.

Greg, please take no offense at this assertion. I believe there is a very small chance his tractor has non-detergent in it. He indicates the gray oil in it now, (evidence of detergent oil) and is willing to clean the VC and pan. Modern oils and unleaded fuel (with alcohol that dries the water out of the fuel system)are the reason vehicles are lasting as long as they do today. If I knew the engine had been operated on ND oil I would do as he is doing (cleaning), and run the good stuff. Synthetic. Multi-vis.

Im not always the sharpest tack in the wall but for my tractors I clean them out with several oil changes about 4-5 hours apart. Then I use 10-40 synthetic oil and add a quart of Lucas oil stabilizers just to be different. I am not sure why it works out ok but I dont seem to burn much oil. I know I'll get some flack but thats worked out fine for the last few years. Drove my M 30 mile Saturday up and down hills pulling an 18 foot trailer with an A on it. Good pressure and little heat buildup.

I agree with Red Dave - its a simple process to drop the oil pan and clean all the crud out. You then have a better idea what you're dealing with.

As for oil it depends on how many hours you're going to work it and change it. If you plan on changing it twice a year (fall and spring) I'd run any quality 10W30 in the winter and straight 30W in the summer. If you know its not going to get changed that often (very little use) I'd run Rotella 5W40 synthetic in it. Its not a true synthetic but it will resist sludging up when water condences in the oil pan with all the sitting.

I'd use any good brand name straight 30 wt. or even a 10w-30, and I would use detergent oil.

Did it have detergent oil in it before? If not, I would take the oil pan off and scrape the sludge out of it before putting detergent oil in.

I've seen them have sludge an inch thick in the oil pans. You don't want that to break loose and plug up oil passages.

Mobil 1 has a new product with a higher viscosity, and is designed for high mileage (acreage) vehicles. That is what I would run.
Drain, put a quart of diesel in it, shake as possible, drain. pour in a quart of cheap oil and shake drain. Then the M1. JimN
