Farmall M starter trouble

My Farmall M starter has the pinion teeth chewed off and the starter doesn't engage the ring gear anymore. I'm trying to fix it myself 'cause nobody around here close works on starters.

Now here's my question,.... how do I get the collar (that the little wire spring seats against) off the end of the shaft so I can get the pinion gear off?

I think Gene-AL has it correctly. CaseIH dealers have a replacement Clutch type drive that is way better than the drive in it now. If the teeth on the flywheel are 50% or better, there is good hope this IH drive will fix it. JimN

Did that a long time ago and don't remember exactly, but some starters have 1)a thrust washer followed by
2) a snap ring which is hidden underneath
3) a cupped snap ring holder that you have to move back out of the way to get at the snap ring.
Take a close look & see if that's the way yours is put together.

I am once again going to stick my neck out on this.Under that collar there may be a pin that holds the drive on.You have to pry the thing back with two medium screwdrivers or pry bars to see if I am correct while held in a vise? CENTAUR
