Front steering shaft

I need a piece of 2" round bar. My parts 400 vertical steering shaft is the right size. Should I save this or use it on my fabrication project?

The meat of the question is whether I am likely to need it on another unrestored tractor. I have eight tractors that use this part.

I'll add to the sage advice below that the shaft might turn out to be pretty darn hard to work with. It is not mild steel. If turning and drilling are needed it might be OK but welding to it might be tricky unless care were taken to use the correct process/rod. JimN

Good thinking, Jim. Yes, it will be welded and I hadn't considered that aspect. I have subsequently found an old 2" SS pump shaft.

On second thought, the three levers that I intend to use on the shaft could also be broached at a local machine shop. I can do the keyways on the shaft.

If you are wondering what I am doing, I'll let you in. I am putting a 400 fast hitch on the front of a 400. It looks like it might work with both a wide and narrow front. Stay tuned for pictures, but not at 11pm.

That shaft was used on the M-450. That's nearly 450000 tractors -- shouldn't be hard to find. I broke one of those on an H one time -- luckily I wasn't in road gear.

I count it as a blessing that I don't have all those tractors. But then again, it might keep the Chinese steel mills going for a day or two.

if it were me, i'd stop by a steel recycler and see if you can find a chunk of 2". i'd hate to cut up a good part, i imagine if still available that shaft would be mighty spendy.
