This is a three minute job for a sawsall. Cut about 95% of the way through, parallel to the shaft, insert large chisel and give it a whack, and pull it off with your hands.

I used a three jaw gear puller and it worked like a charm. I bought a USA made puller for $70. but I admit I have seen made in china pullers for $23. They will also have other uses and you won't beat up your wheel. I wanted to rebuild my old wheel because the new ones are made in china also.

If this is a replacement, And the wheel is no good, you can hack saw the hub of the steering wheel open by making a longitudal kerf thru the hub and the hub will open up . May need a cut on each side. Also try American Chemsearch's "YIELD" it is phenomanal on rust and corrosion.

Jimmy,

the splined shaft on the steering wheel is silghtly tapered also (at least the one on my 460 gas utility was) I did the same as PaulW when was pounding with the BFH I noticed oil running down the outside of the bell housing. Ended up having to remove PS unit and inspect fearing I had cracked something. WHEW only a plug that was forced out. It was a bugger though getting the wheel off!

good luck

Butch

I have a 340 U and had the same problem.

First and foremost . . . do not hammer down on the steering shaft! . . . it may knock out the expansion plug on the steering housing. I did that once I had my steering wheel puller tightened up, trying to break it free. I had to remove the steering housing to put in a new plug. I later discovered that warning in the shop manual.

Apply penetrating oil (I like Kroil) to the shaft where it enters the wheel center several times a day or so before. A steering wheel or harmonic balancer puller works. There are two 5/16 threaded holes in the steering wheel ring that goes onto the shaft . . . probably need to retap them to clean the threads. . . use some grade 8 bolts to connect puller. Once hand tight, the key is using percussion from an impact wrench, set on reduced air pressure. Short bursts, add penetrating oil, impact again. Tighten puller. Even though my wheel was corroded in the center, there were enough threads to catch to make this work. When you get it off make sure you put antisieze on the shaft so it"s easier next time!

Paul, I have been squeezing the nozzle on PB Blaster and had purchased a 1/4" tap and 2 1/2" cap head bolts. Went out to do mine this p.m. and see grade five, not eight and not 5/16" bolts/tap. I turned off the heater as I had best wait until tomorrow.

Well, my memory gets increasingly selective as time goes on. Are they 1/4 not 5/16? . . . well,I"ve got to pull the steering wheel on my 240 this weekend to rebuild the power steering so you saved me going out to look before I bring out the tap. But the technique has worked. Should have done it today as it was 65 here in NJ, but it"s going to drop 30 degrees overnight. Good luck on yours!

I am not certain, but I believe the wheel will just pull of the shaft. You will likely need either a "T" puller or a jaw style puller. to aid in getting it off. The steering wheels tend to be stubborn whenever you wanna get em off, at least in my expieriences they have.

Also whereabouts are you located? I may be able to help you with finding parts pending on location.
