I have a 656 gas Farmall International SG drive with TA, WF, 3pt. I bought the tractor about 7 years ago and have worked her hard and packed tons of fuel to her over the years. I like this tractor and the size is exactly what I need. I have been considering swaping in a diesel for a little more fuel efficiency and was wondering what kind of modifications would be required to fit a 4BT Cummins in place of the gasser? Will all of the sheet metal fit around this motor and what will it take to bolt up to the existing tranny? Any information or ideas would be appreciated. Thanks.

Thank you all for your replies. Everybody has pretty much confirmed my suspicion on the project being more trouble than what it is worth. I will definrtly be keeping my eyes open for a deal on an IH diesel motor or a complete tractor. If I come across one of the motors Hugh brought up will it require a different radiator? Will the existing fuel tank work? Now maybe I can convince the wife to let me get an 806 diesel!

Friend had a Hydro 86 with the 312 diesel in it - engine always started really good, never really used any oil, and was reasonably efficient for a Hydro tractor.

A 4bt would probably do pretty good for efficiency, but will take quite a bit of fabrication and skill to get in there...

Hugh is on the right track. The 666D will have the American 312 in it. It is one of the finest engines ever built by anyone. Can probably be bought for what you will spend on the Cummins refit. It is basicly the same tractor as the 656. The 310 is a German built engine that came in the later 686 version. Still the same tractor. They are good as well. I have a 666 with the 312, it is a bear and easy on fuel. I know it is only my opinion, but I have had a couple JD's, Fords, and operated several others, and none have engines any better or as fuel efficient as the IH diesel.

D282 out of a 560 will bolt right in without mods.
if you go to some of the newer engines you may have to swap frame rails but most of them will bolt to the trans.

Clint: Did you ever think of buying a 666D or 686D, and keeping your old 656 for a parts tractor. Probably be less money than what you now propose. I think Cummins can sell you a new 5.9 that will bolt right up. If you go used it will depend on what the Cummins came from.

You could go IH 310, 312, 358 or 360, they will all bolt up at clutch housing. I never used any of these engines long term, however a neighbor had a 666 (I can never remember which is 310 or 312, however his was American engine) and a 886 with 360. He bought a new CaseIH with a 5.9L Cummins. I drove all 3 of them on tillage equipment, and was not impressed with that Cummins. He couldn't have been either, the Cummins was gone in two years. Last I talked with him in 2001, the 666 and 886 were still around. Personally I'd look hard for an IH engine.

Anything is possible if you want to throw time and money after it. This type of thing has been discussed on her before with different tractors. Basically, the recommendation comes down to buying a comparable tractor with the diesel in it. But then it is your tractor and your money. There are just going to be lots of things that need to be swapped out and unless you have a donor tractor with a 4BT Cummins in it you are going to have buy/scrounge/manufacture everything.
