IH 656 mower size

I have a IH 656 gas tractor and I would like to get a rotary mower for the back of it, pull type not a three point. What size mower can this tractor handle. No real brush hogging just pasture mowing and CRP. I have only one hyd. outlet. This limits my choice to single wings unless I want to switch hoses or use a crank cylinder.

A 656 can handle about any mower you want it to. If it's only 40 or 50 acres a year, you could take a 6, 7 or 8 footer and mow no fuss without straining anything. By the way, a 656 gas is about the smoothest, quietest ride around and no slouch when the going gets tough.

Just don't get one too small. I bought a 460 once that came with a 5' rotary mower behind it. That implement dealer sure saw me coming. I thought I was getting a good deal cause he was throwing the mower in with the tractor. The tractor was about 7' wide. It still mowed ok though.

Whether you have a narrow or wide mower, the tractor tires are going to knock down the tall stuff so it never looks nice like a evenly mowed football field. The grass in the tire tracks lays over and doesn't mow even like the rest. I also mowed some areas with 6' tall giant ragweed in it. It just leaves a mess behind. Last summer we had a lot of tall ragweed again and I didn't have that tractor and mower anymore. I just put the loader blade a few inches off the ground and cut/unrooted/knocked it all down.

It is nice to be able to use the hitch to raise it up when you are moving to and from the field.

Maybe someone knows about how much a used mower may run. I suppose the next thing I will buy is a used swather. I have most of the pasture swathed and baled anyway. Can't do it to CRP but we don't mow or cut it anyway. There are probably plenty of custom swathers & balers around where you are at. Many farmers do it on the side. We feed horses and burros but last year we made enough hay that we could sell the excess, pay for cutting & baling, and still end up with some cash with the price of hay the way it is.

Whatever size you get,I woulds suggest a Woods or Bushog or something of equal quality.

That tractor will handle a 15 footer anywhere. 10 foot mowers don't hold up like others will. With more than one gear box on a single deck, they tend to shake theirselves to death. The 15 foot will have a gearbox for each deck thus allowing room to absorb some of the vibration.

Biggest piece of junk I have is a 10 foot Rhino mower. Always working on it. Never have any trouble with my 15 foot BMB or Bush Hog 2615.

For just pasture mowing a Woods 15 footer would be the ticket.

A 10 footer would be easy to handle probably easy to find used and in good shape and probably not too expensive.
