I just bought a 50 MD, that hasn't been started in a year. Have cleaned the carb., and have discovered that to start it you evidently have to push one lever completely forward to turn on the gas to the float in the carb. What position does the rod for the linkage to the fuel pump go? Also while cleaning out the air breather discovered something in the bottom, is there a media supposed to be in there or do I have sludge?

One thing I didn't see mentioned is damage to the starting (gas) valves. During the shutdown procedure do not leave the valves open as the heat will not be dissapated if the valves are not seated. These valves are wimpy things and may warp if left open. Bill

Thanks, found a reprinted Owners/Operators manual last night. Temps in Mid Missouri are to be in the teens the next few days so I'll spend productive time in the library/releif room. The guy I bought this from couldn't get it started, I'm thinking that was a good thing.

Great Questions.
The Aircleaner bottom has nothing but engine oil in it when clean. The dirt/sludge is just an indication of the need for service on it. The sticker would say clean and refill daily in dusty conditions. I've seen 1/4 inch deposited in one day (I wore a probably ineffective bandanna to keep dirt out of my lungs).
Starting on gas is as you described lever all the way. The Diesel governor control can be off while on gas, but must be moved into the mid RPM range as it is switched to Diesel or there will not be injection. I would not have it start at wideopen position, but just above the speed it runs on gasoline for starting. There is no throttling position for gasoline. The carb has no throttle. Usually it takes a modest choking to get it rich enough to start. (some black carbony gasoline smoke as it fires up) then wait until 1 minute goes by in the summer, and 2.5 to 3 min. in the colder winter befor switching. If it has been running and is still warm, no time is needed befor switching.
When shutting down there are two differing opinions. If it has run for more than five minutes total, I will let it idle for two minutes on diesel as low as it will still run. Then close the diesel alltogether stopping it. If it has been worked and is nice and toasty (it needs this about once a week) it should be idled for more like 4 minutes, then stopped.
The other opinion is to shut down the diesel and let it run on gasoline while it cools off. then shut it off (useing the same times as above), then switching back to diesel position of the switch lever to close the third valves, when stopped.
A diesel engine runs cold when ideling and the temp will be reduced easily on diesel. My philosophy, and I have had no issues with MD and TD 18 operation for hundreds of hours. THe issue is head temperature normalization to prevent cracks from forming. Shutting them off stone dead from hot operation is a No No. I hope this helps, they are a great and powerful unique engine type. ENJOY, JimN

Thanks, two things my dad got firmly implanted into my brain via his boot and my butt was, check the oil before starting EVERY time and let the engine cool before shutting down. We only had 3 IH tractors on the farm, an 806, 1466 and a super C. This one just peaked my interest and will try to find something with accurate instructions. The IT manuals are good for overhauls but not much on everyday operation.

Hello JimN: I remember reading some of the start instructions a long time ago. Might have been from our '41MD. On a standard engineering day of 59F and 29.92 Hg it was suppose to be 600 turns on gas minimum befor going to diesel. Dad insisted that we cool on diesel then switch back to gas and then use kill switch. When stopped, shut off gas lever. That was our standard way with our MD's because Dad was trained on diesel mechanics befor buying our '41 MD, which was the first one in MN and 6th from the factory. It never had the head replaced. The late '53 SMD was run the same way, mostly by me, and also never had the head replaced. Great engines. That '41 payed for our farm during WW2 by doing extra custom work on the side besides all heavy work on two family farms befor being traded for the SMD.
Not disagreeing with you at all, just tossing in my 2 cents. agpilot

..... Forgot to add this item: When the engine still had heat in it from running earlier, we started on gas as always and waited. Then would quickly pull the run-on-gas lever off and only then open the diesel to about the 900 rpm area. This delayed diesel action would almost eliminate all the smoke in switch-over which can lead to fouled plugs and a smoked up shed where others are working. ag...
