Good news and bad.

My block went off to the machinist to get 'hot tanked'...

...but he tells me today that the #4 rod journal on my crankshaft is cracked.

Looks like I'll be hunting for another.

I thought cast iron can be welded,- the machinist says not.
Or is this a place where you don't want to mess with a weld?

Any good leads on where I can get another? Preferably with a guarantee so I'm not stuck with another one with a crack. I'm in central pennsylvania.

(*sigh*)

If this is on a C or super C , I have a NOS that is still in the cosmoline. But I would need $350.00 plus shipping.

Thanks, guys.
I guess std would be best, if possible, and if used, I'll be leaving any decision about the health of any crank I buy to my machinist. That part would be out of my league.

Gene, I'm not sure if you're offering one.

I'll e-mail you guys one-by-one about prices. This project is getting costlier by the minute, and shame of it is, I have to pay attention to my budget.

This started because my clutch was slipping like crazy, and while I was in there, I wanted to do bearings and rings. Like Jack said, to do it right. I found a mis-matched piston, two rods swapped in their cylinders, a scored (and now cracked) crankshaft.
Glad I decided to look at it all.

BTW, my pressure plate was badly warped. Three areas had grease on them and weren't making contact at all.

If in fact the crank is cracked nope it can't be fixed and hold up very long. Believe me you don't want it to brake when the engine is running or you might be looking for a complete engine instead of just a crank shaft. Now then what tractor do you have?? I might have a good used crank on hand. Or you can also buy a crank shaft from this site and or value bilt

BTW, it's a '49 Super-A.
I have the block casting number, and/or the casting number off my old crank. Are they needed to be able to get a crank that fits?

This is new to me, sorta like "P and R Pete's Excellent Adventure", and I'm learning as I go.

Never foresaw needing a new crank, though.

Sorry to hear that. My crank broke between 2 holes they drill to balance it. But the motor still ran, with a heck of a knock!

Take your time and fix it right, you"ll have a lot of time and money in it and you don"t want to do it twice. And it should run for years when you are done.

Jack
