Don't believe every thing that has been said so far,a straight DV550 will work right with a straight DT436 on less fuel. I did work for IH dealer at that that and we woild coustom plow with a 1468 and 5/18 plow no problem. The 4 / 8 was off governor and ran on all 8 at 75 percent.
I don't think the 4 were all on one bank, don't remember.

As far as heavy-duty diesels go, a V-8 will rarely take as much abuse as an inline 6. The V-8 crankshaft only allows for 5 main bearings, and you've got two connecting rods on each rod journal. Let's not forget that the 550's exhaust system made it possible to install twin M&W turbochargers, creating even more stress. The 68 series was basically a marketing gimick. Massey and Oliver offered tractors with higher quality V-8's, and the corporate no-nothings at IH thought they had to compete. Makes for a nice collectors item, but a 1466 will walk all over the 1468 in the field.

Even BIGGER CNH V-8... in reply to RIVIR, 02-13-2008 13:10:20
I heard a good one a few days ago... The CNH "Steiger Plant at Fargo also builds the blue New Holland 4X4's.

NH is now usings Iveco 6-cylinder engines (must also be part of the FIAT Group), so as not to buy Cummins engines any longer.

ANYHOW, they have reached the HP limits if the 6-Cylinder Ivecos, and rumor has it they will be soon introducing IVECO V-8's. THAT should be interesting!

Here's a "TJ" with a 6-cylinder Iveco:

Steiger started building 4wd tractors for Ford back in the mid 1970's.They were the FW series and they had Cummins engines. They also built tractors for International Harvester.I toured the plant in 1976 while i was employed by a Ford tractor dealer. The FW20,40 and 60 are Ford models that i remember.

There were a few of them in my area, the biggest problem was the unloading system that made the engine run on one bank only when idling or under light load.Didn't take the farmers long to figure out how to bypass that,I believe it was at the 93 RPRU in Boonville where a guy had one beautifully restored,He idled it thru the parade running on four, when he hit the throtle it covered the tractor with black unburned fuel He wasn't a happy camper.

Im my area, the only people I knew of that had these were tractor pullers. I always heard that the IH V-8 diesels werent much, thats why the production numbers were low. I think they look pretty neat myself.

I had a 1468 that I farmed with a number of years the motor was a very good engine but we did have some problems with the rear end. Traded it wished I had it back think they will be worth some good money soon. Don't really know why they were built I believe they were trying to build a fuel saving engine was there thinking.

My father use to work for IH then and i don't think they had too many problems with the motor other than you get more torque from a staigth six. The biggest problem I believe was that there was tooooo much room to turn these motors up and guys were tearing out the rearends of these tractors.
