I took the generator off and put an alternator on my 504 diesel. The wiring is an absolute mess so I'm gutting it and starting over. Going to try to simplify it. Got most everything straightened out except should I run the hot wire from the alternator through the ammeter and then down to the positive battery terminal on the starter? Or do I have to route it somehow through the idiot light on the dash? Any suggestions or diagrams would be much appreciated.

A 504 did not have an ammeter from factory. If you put one on it, then yes thehot wire from the alt should go to the ammeter and from the other post on the ammeter to the batt terminal of the solenoid. If no ammeter, run wire from bat term of alt to bat term of solenoid. As for the idiot light, search the archives for wiring diagrams, the idiot light takes the place of the diode shown in most of these diagrams (I am assuming you are using a Delco internal regulator alternator).
