Woke up drenched in sweat from a nightmare that I was face-to-face with a slimy pockmarked redheaded alien robot with rotting skin. (*shudder*)

Went out in my shop and there it was for real!

Guess nothing to do but just dive in.

Where's tractorsam when I need him?
LOL

Are you guys aware of a book that Binder Books has, titled "Touch Control"? It's a 5½ by 8½ book, and it covers cubs, SA and AV, C and SC, and Int SA.
www.binderbooks.com

I have the I&T shop manual also. (LOL, the "overhaul directions" consist of 2 paragraphs that basically say 'disassembly will be self-evident', and 'put everything back from where you got it'.)

But the "serviceman's handbook" (GSS-1024) has lots more, like- tools needed, troubleshooting guide, 2 pages of 'service pointers' (worth the price alone), a tolerance chart, more views from different angles, how to make a tool if you need to refinish a check-valve seat, a list of other reference material, etc. It was well worth the $9 for me. If anybody has a particular question about this manual, e-mail me.

I just got a copy of that manual before I started into this one. It would have been nice if it had included more on the reassembly but I should manage. tractorsam

Well, I've always wondered what the inside of one of them looked like :). I just cannot get that head to come off and I've been treating it to about as much brute force as I think it can stand (I've already caused it some serious headaches). Fortunately it's out on the workbench in the garage, the kitchen table is currently underneath other assorted junk as the kitchen is being renovated. I probably won't be able to keep ahead of you even if I get this head off pretty soon because I've still got the engine to reassemble. The whole reason for taking everything apart is that the hydraulic pump has chewed the rest of the timing gears up. Time to get back out there. tractorsam

P and RPete,

Please take plenty of photos. I have a 53 SA that is leaking some kind of terrible. I guess I'm going be taking mine apart soon and I could use some real life examples.

DLJ, will do! I'll start new posts so it stays near the top.
But with three kids, a full-time job, and a wife in school, it may be slow-going.

Anyone know if the inside of a 140 touch control looks anything like this?

There was a change in check valves from the Super C and Super A to the 140
Take lots of pictures.
I just did mine in my 140.Its a nice little project.Clean Clean Clean is the name of the game
You can get a complete o/h kit from Case/Ih for around 120.00
PS save all of your leather boot dust covers

It looks like we are about at the same point in our projects. I pulled the head and bottom plate off our 48 SA touch control unit last night. I had to use the putty knife technique to getting my head off too.

Greg, I can see your head came off as sticky as mine. What a mess. Can't wait scrape the gasket.

I was surprised, as you must have been, how much fluid was left in it after the drain quite running! LOL

If you keep posting pics as well, maybe we'll all get through this fairly gracefully.

Maybe not! I hear tractorsam is doing his on his kitchen table. LOL

Haha, always a good plan!

I believe the blocks for the A and Super-C are the same...at least, I seem to remember the manual saying that. Regardless, you're now a couple days ahead of Sam. His Super-C is the Super-C I'm purchasing. The hydraulic block has been on his workbench for a couple weeks now. I've been hoping to walk into the shop and see the cover laying on the bench, but that hasn't happened yet.

TractorSam hasn't gotten that far into the Hydraulic casing yet...the blasted cover has stood firmly (no pun intended) in our way. Brute force and ignorance (he provided the former, I provided the latter) didn't get us terribly far...

It"s the rear of my hydraulic unit from off my super-A after the head was removed.

Tractorsam has a C, and was asking about how to get the head off his about a week ago. My clever plan was on trying to stay about a week behind him in the rebuild process, hoping, even if the units aren"t exactly the same, that I could benefit in knowledge from everything he screwed up all to hell on his! (*wink*) LOL

AR, I used the putty-knife trick. Even then, I had to work on it awhile. Even THEN, it didn"t come off clean. The consistency of the gasket/glue(?) was like sticky tar.
