It"s past time for new batteries on the 1566. I want to put the 3H or whatever size it is that will fit the original boxes and covers. What"s the best combination to go with - one 12 volt, two twelve volts, or two 6 volts?

Mitch

Hi Mitch. Where the heck ya been anyway? :>)

It's six of one and a half dozen of the other.

If your cables need replaced, now is the time to go with the 12s. If not, stay with the sixers.

I've got tractors wired both ways and can't tell a bit of difference between the two setups.

I recommend you stay with two 6Vs in series.

With two 12V in parallel, if one battery goes south, BOTH batteries get ruined. Even if you think you caught it in time, you didn't. You'll spend the next several months and hundreds of dollars chasing battery problems from one battery to the other, back and forth, as one battery dies and sends the other into a slow death spiral.

Because the two 6V are in series, they can't cross-charge, or cross-discharge as the case may be. If you lose a cell in one battery, you've at least got a decent chance that the tractor will still start, and better yet, you only need to replace that one battery.

What's the difference?

Dual batteries are always replaced in pairs anyway.

1466 and 1566 originally came with two 4eh six volt batteries but they are no longer manufacured. you will need to use two 3eh six volt batteries. they have one less set of plates in each cell but they will work very well.

The 1066 took two six volt batteries. The long narrow type ---that's the only size that fits in the carriers. I would think yours is probably the same.

I could be wrong but I believe that only six volt batteries will fit, but again I could be wrong. I fabricated new boxes for my 1206 to put big 12 volts run in parallel on. Turns over faster than it did, but then again the old 6 volt batteries were pretty old. Put new 6 volts on the 1066, run in series, and starts real nice. Moral of the story is that new 6 six volt batteries will most likely be sufficient. Unless they are way more expenive. I'm no expert.
