I have a '44 H, and one of the "features" of a war tractor is that the front emblem was made of tin, so aluminum could be used in the war effort. Well, My H has a "tin" emblem, as far as I know. I know a magnet will stick to it. However, it looks like crap. It was painted all black. So, I have a bit of a dilema.

Do I strip the emblem down and have it chromed, then paint in the black spots, or should I just buy an aluminum one from somewhere?

If it looks bad, just buy a new one. A new one looks great on a restored tractor and a old damaged one looks good on a un-restored tractor.

Use blue 3M masking tape to define the edges, let dry, then pull the tape. JimN

Wow! Great tip Dick! Thanks, and good to hear from you! If I get out to Fallon any time, I'll try to give you a heads up!

If you do not plan to restore your emblem, buy a new one. IH still offers it, part # 49404D. They are painted and ready to install.....

The metal knob has always been on it.
You guys are right. I'll stick with the original and just repaint it. It will test my lack of painting skills.

Most of the folks are only going to know about the signifigance of the tin emblem if you tell them, otherwise, most of them aren't going to know.If you wanted to be this correct, then you'd have to find a wartime metal stick knob too.

The aftermarket ones don't fit well, but when I put one on my 41 H,I put my effort into getting it to fit properly,as opposed to putting time into an old emblem.

Mike, that emblem never was chromed. If you have a fairly steady hand, just get a small can of gloss black enamel paint, a small can of aluminum paint, a good, soft bristled brush, and have at it. If you make a couple of boo-boos, don't worry about it. At least it will fit, which is more than I can say for the aftermarket emblems.

It just depends on how much money you want to spend and what you plan to do with her when she's done. If you plan to get serious about shows and such you might try to restore the original. Having it re-chromed is probably not cheap, although there are some nice near-chrome finishes available - try the Eastwood company. If you will take it to a few local parades and otherwise use it for work around your place, the reproductions are a good way to go and inexpensive. I will warn you however, the new plates dont fit the same as the originals. Have you considered using the original by just buffing paint off the high points - some people like the old look.

Your call.

I believe the wartime emblems were painted, not chromed. I have the Farmall emblem of my 41 H, and even though its in near perfect shape, it has hundreds of tiny pin holes in it.
