As my 1949 Farmall Cub would not start this spring I started to check things and felt I had weak spark at the plugs. I checked the points and decided to replace them as they were fairly old. During this process the insulator block on the post that goes through the distributor body, broke into many pieces. It also was very old. This is the terminal with the wire from the on/off switch. So I replaced the post and insulator. I also replaced the points and condenser. There is a wire from the magneto near this post that I did not see when I removed the old post. I assumed it should be connected to this post but when I do it grounds out the point assembly and I have no spark. When tested separately, this wire is grounded. Where should this wire be attached? I would appreciate any help you can give me. Thanks

John,
Thanks for your reply. No I do not have an external coil. I did finally get it running by connecting it all back up with new points, condenser, rotor and new plugs as well as making sure everything was in the correct timing. I think it just wasn't all set correctly. Thanks again for your reply.

Does your magneto by chance have an external coil? if so the wire form the internal one has to be disconnected for it to run.

Jossette,
Thanks for your reply and the wiring diagram. This will be very useful in the future. I did finally get the tractor running by connecting it all back up with new points, condenser, rotor and new plugs as well as making sure everything was in the correct timing. I think it just wasn't all set correctly. Combination of a lot of little things. Thanks again for your reply.

Bob, Thanks for the quick reply. Right now I have the wire from the ignition switch disconnected from the terminal at the distributor. As a matter of fact everything is disconnected from that terminal (points, condenser, wire from the magneto) as I wanted to be sure the terminal was not grounded and it is not. But the wire to the magneto shows it is grounded if you measure with an ohm meter. Is this correct? The engine is at cylinder #1 TDC and the magneto has just clicked. Any help is appreciated.

The ignition switch on a mag-equipped tractor grounds when turned off, and goes open when the switch is "on".

Try pulling the ignition switch out and testing the wire again. If it now shows open circuit it's the magneto "kill wire". Fasten it to the mag terminal post and you should be good to go.

Bob not sure if my reply to you was sent properly so I'm sending it again. Sorry if this is a duplication.
