Super M Seal Removal?

Is there a way to gain clearance to remove the plates for replacing the felt seals for the engine (behind the flywheel)? There is a top and bottom half. I have removed the bolts from each plate, but cannot remove the pieces due to the lack of clearance. I would like to avoid removing the whole flat metal housing piece just to remove the plates in order to replace the felt pieces. I am replacing the clutch and would like to replace the felt pieces behind the flywheel while I am in there. Also, does anyone know the torque spec for these bolts? Thanks.

Thanks. This worked. I dropped the oil pan and was then able to tap the bottom lip out through the rear. The plates dropped down. The seals definitely needed replacement. I'll cut the other paper gaskets tomorrow and will piece this back together. I'll then be able to put the flywheel back on.

Leave the back plate on but you will need to remove the oil pan. Once the pan is off you can remove the third piece of the seal assembly and then the other pieces will drop out the bottom.

I may just leave the seal and put it back together. About the only way I could support the engine is to build an overhead support with 6X6s and drop a chain down around the back side of the engine. I could use a hoist on it.
I would still be concerned about the rails being loose. The weight of the engine in the rear is currently resting on 3 bolts at the bottom that attach to the large round metal plate. The metal plate is somehow attached to the rails-although the large bolts are out of it, so I am not sure how it is attached because the large bolts are out.

In retrospect, it would have been better to hang the engine rather than support it on the side rails.

Put a chain around the rear of the engine and support it with a cherry picker. then remove whatever is holding the plate and get it out of the way.

I am considering not replacing the felt pieces if it will be that involved. If I have to take the lip off that attaches to the oil pan, I may not have enough support to hold the engine up. The side rails would then be free from the rear of the engine (it looks like).

If you can't remove the seal retainer at this point then I would say that you will have to remove the large steel plate. But first you will have to come up with some way to support the engine because, as you say, "The side rails would then be free from the rear of the engine."

There is no specific torque listed for those bolts. Just use reccomended torque for the size and grade of bolts in question.

Its been a while since I changed that seal but I do remember on my M I had to remove the oil pan to get all the bolts out and to remove the pieces that hold the seal. I believe there is 3 pieces total and you don't realize the 3rd one is there until you remove the oil pan.
