Glow-plug on TEF 20

Hi, I've just bought a 1955 TEF 20. I know nothing about tractors and even less about diesels, so this might have been a bad idea...
My current problem concerns the glow-plug. I want to see if it's working. but I daren't try it on a battery as my cheap multi-meter shows no resistance. It may just be that it's too low to register on my meter, so the question is: what should be the electrical resistance of a correctly-working glow-plug?
TIA

why not take it out of the manifold and operate switch with the plug touching the manifold, you will SEE if it works properley or not then....MIND YOU DONT BURN YOURSELF

I don't want to risk putting a dead short across the battery - I saw one go 'bang' once, acid everywhere...

The switch is missing anyway, it's just got a bit of wire dangling from it.

You wouldnt be able to put a dead short on the battery as you put it, because of the cable size to the heater plug, it would simply burn the wiring out if the heater was faulty plus you would know straight away as soon as you applied power to it that something was wrong.

A moot point, as it happens...
Much to my surprise, the machine started perfectly without the glowplug being connected. It stopped after a couple of minutes due to fuel-starvation, but I'm pretty sure that's just a case of it needing a good clean-up after a long period of neglect.
I actually got to drive it round the field this afternoon, so I'm definitely a happy bunny ATM.

That engine didn't really require much if any heat at all, it was always an excellent starter,if it was just a little on the cold side just using the excess fuel device would be sufficient, only when it was really cold would the Ki-Gass be required. Regarding the fuel starvation, make sure the auxillary tank is full before you try to bleed the system, if you have any problems filling this tank check the fuel tap on the main tank for flow and also the banjo bolt on the main feed into the tank, both of which can block if the fuel isnt clean, check the flow from the leak-off pipe on top of the auxillary tank and you should see that it has a decent flow from it any doubts about the flow check both of the items mentioned earlier...Regards...John

This could be the problem - I haven't got an auxilliary tank...
The previous owner connected a rubber pipe direct from the main tank to the inlet on the fuel-injection unit, with a 'leak-off'(?) connection from the rear injector back into the rubber pipe, and a car-type fuel filter also in the pipe.
Once the injector unit has been bled, the tractor will tick-over for about 10 minutes before it dies and has to be bled again; asking it to do any work shortens this time considerably.
I intend to restore all the original bits eventually - I've got everything except the auxilliary tank itself and a few lengths of pipe.

So the clown had cut out all the fuel filters as well had he? Even so, the engine should keep running although it is set up like you say. It still sounds like a fuel flow problem to me, check the flow from the main tank, if necessary dismantle the fuel tap, as they use to block internally, there should be quite a good flow through the tap. If you would like a drawing of the fuel system showing all the parts, give me an email address I can send it to. Regards...John

Yes, he had - and recently too, by the look of the brass swarf all over the engine. At least all the bits are still there, so it's just a matter of making-up new pipes to connect it all together again.
A drawing would be greatly appreciated - please send it to bob@bobunitt.freeserve.co.uk.

Just why do they do things like that...cant understand anyone cutting out the fuel filters like that, they must be nuts. Drawing sent seperately to you. BTW I saw you on another site asking about Standish..I only live about 10 miles from there but I never heard about any vintage thing...did you find out anymore about it yet?

Hi John, you seem to be the fount of all knowledge when its come to all things TEF related. I've just purchased my first tractor a TEF20 and it probably not as good as I thought it was. The electric have been butchered buy previous owners and I would appreciate if you or anyone else could spare a little time to reply to my email address as I'd love to get the electrics resolved before I start any of the mechanic work. Regards, Colin

Thanks for sending the drawing, although it hasn't arrived yet (e-mail currently slow because of all the virus activity, I think).
I've asked about the Standish show on a couple of other forums, but no explanation forthcoming as yet.
