I just got a TO35. I ordered manuals the day after I got it but they have not yet arrived. So unless someone can lend a hand, my tractor will sit where I turned it off until the manuals arrive.

Here's the problem, the tractor has power steering and leaks from the steering box, the steering began to make a little noise so I decided to check the fluid. I located the power steering pump on the left side of the engine, it is topped by a large canister with a nut on top of it. Just forward there is what looks like a fluid reservoir with a screw off cap. I remove this cap and found no fluid. So I searched this site and concluded that I should put 90 wt gear oil in the power steering.

After putting about 1.5 quarts of gear oil/hydraulic fluid into this reservoir, there is still no visible fluid. Wondering, I looked around and got a sinking feeling that perhaps I have been pouring gear oil into the engine crankcase! I pulled the engine oil dip stick, and it seems to read above full!

Did I pour the gear oil into the engine crankcase?

If so I guess I'll need to drain the crank case and refill, how much does it take without changing the filter?

If the above is correct, how do I check the power steering fluid?

Hey Guy, Cant help you out w/the power steer'n, maybe Big Dean can. He has most all the answers from his many years of experience w/Ferg's. I did want to mention the fact that it's nice to see a couple of locals w/the same good taste. I own a 57' TO-35, here in Tracy. She aint as pretty as yours but she may someday! Good luck Guy.

Steve

I have a '55 TO-35 and the engine crankcase filler is a cap on the very front of the left side of the block, right behind the lower radiator hose. My book says 5 qt of oil without filter. Don't have p/s so can't help you with that one. Where in CA are you? My TO-35 is in Iowa, but I live in Fremont, CA. Mike P

Mike, thanks for confirming what I suspected. Tomorrow I'll drain and replace the oil, then check my power streeting fluid.

I'm in Dunsmuir, on the Upper Sacramento River, a few miles south of Mount Shasta.
