HELP!!! TO-30 transmission question

My wife was brush-hogging the pasture yesterday and the tractor got bogged down in some heavy weeds and the engine died. She went to take it out of gear to restart, but the shifter was stuck in gear. By the time I got there, she (i think) broke the shifter off inside the trans- it floats quite easily now but fails to work. Which brings me to my questions: 1. If the shifter is broken, where can I get a new one? I've hit my usual suppliers with no luck. 2. If the trans is stuck, how can I free it up? It's sitting on a minor incline, in gear, with the pto engaged. HELP!!

Maybe I'm a bit dense, but you can take the mower off the tractor. Just disconnect it from the PTO shaft and lower it to the ground or vice versa. Then have someone hold the clutch down and tow it home to work on the gear box. Good Luck, and let us know what you find out.

Sounds as though she got a little heavy with the poor old thing. Remove the gearbox cover and put all 3 selectors in line again and drop the cover back making sure that the lever is located in the selectors again. If you can see through the oil filler hole it is possible to do it through there sometimes, depends where the lever has finished up. If you would like the page from the parts list so you can see what you are doing, let me have an email address to send it to.

Scott,
You can disengage the PTO by stepping on the clutch and moving the lever on the left side of the tranny case. That disengages the PTO AND the pump. If I were you, I would drop the mower, disconnect it, and tow the tractor home where you can work on it. Someone wil have to ride the tractor to hold the clutch pedal down. Your wife probably dislodged a pin that hold the shifter in place. If you can lift the rubber boot off the lever, you might be able to figure out what happened. I'm sure someone that uses this forum has had experience with this sort of thing. I never have. So hang on and you might get a better reply than the one I'm giving you. Good Luck.

This won't work if there is tension in the pto and ground drive transmission. He will need to rock the tractor wheels back and forth until the tensions is released from the pto. Not fun on a hill with a baler and wagon.

There is another way, but it is pretty dangerous.

A third way is to tow with another tractor.

All help is appreciated, Maybe the problem is with the clutch, as I tried to disengage the PTO and it wouldn't budge.

You may find that there is some load on it off the mower and that is causing it to to hang on to the gear. If the clutch was hanging for some reason I would have thought that the tractor would still drive though. Sounds like you may have to take the PTO shaft off while you start up if you can then at least you can lift it without driving the mower. No doubt all will be revealed when you sort your gearbox out.

I have had the trans stick once also. Like everyone says- you have the 'hog putting pressure on the gear probably. It was my problem in my case.
