I am still trying to stop the enging surging under light load. I have screwed the bumper adjusting screw right in and it still surges.

Before I go to the trouble of taking off the timing cover (removing front axle etc)to access the governor, is the bumper spring likely to have broken. Is there any way to check. As the governor controls otherwise I don't think the problem is in the weights.

The surging is definately governor related as with the throttle disconnected the engine purrs.

Thanks

Phil

Thanks fellas. I have now solved the problem and she runs fine without surging. The problem lay in the clearance betwen the push rod and the governor arm. With no way to take up the 4mm slack (should be between 5 and 10 thou') by adjusting the spring hook I used an oversize rivet as a sleeve on the top part of the spring and made the final adjustment by bending the spring hook.

My 83 year old Ferguson dealer told me when I was setting up the govenor on one of my tractors to back this all the way out and set the lock nut. I did this and have had no trouble with it, give it a try. Scott

As you screw in the adjuster on the timing cover from 'out' you should feel it come up again the bumper spring. Feel your way carefully the spring is not that strong - if you cannot feel anything the spring is broken.

I would seriously advise following the governor setting up procedure as laid out in the Ferguson manual - adjustments on some parts of the linkage must be correct to within 25 thou for correct operation.

Had big problems with mine - as posted before, and following the manual did the trick. I had not realised just how sensitive the adjustment is.

Can I safely remove the bumper spring screw all the way? I have broken off one of the tabs and need to cut a new tab or weld a nut onto it.

It is rather difficult to turn right now, so I'd also like to get it all the way out so I can get it un-gummed and (hopefully) put it back in at the correct setting.

Thanks in advance.

Glenn

Yes - I had to cut a new slot in mine too - just unscrew it and attack it with a small hacksaw. Should be no problem.

Thanks, James. When I get a chance I'll try and get that screw out, clean it up, and cut a new slot.
