Help Please: Setting Ignition Point Gap

I have a '55 TO35 Deluxe (Gas) that just underwent some valve/seal work and a Carb rebuild. Anyway, after several (5) hours of mowing, the tractor started backfiring in both the Carb and the exhaust pipe. The gap points appear to be fried. My questions: 1. What alignment (engine - distributer shaft) is required before setting the point gap? 2. How can I tell when I have successfully aligned the engine and distributer shaft? 3. What would cause the points to fry?

I'm not a mechanic or a long-term antique owner. I would like to learn to do minor maintenance on my own though. Any and all advice is welcome. Respectfully,

Jim,
You set the points with the rubbing block on the point arm on the high point of the distributor cam. It is independent of what cylinder cam lobe you use. You points can be fried by having the wrong coil or by having your ignition capicitor fail( the one next to the points.) After you get your points set, I'd replace the condensor first; it's cheap. If you're still frying the points, you may have a problem with the coil. If you have a 12V system, you need to make sure you have a 12 volt coil or six volt coil with a ballast resistor. If you get that all straightened out and you still have a problem, you'll need to check your timing. Hope this helps.

P.S. Please note I did NOT mention moving the distributor!!! You will be turning the engine over by hand.
