Is GL-5 mineral oil ? I was told GL-1 is. Walmart here in NY caries only GL-5 gear oil at least my super store does. I have a T0 20 manafactured in 1949. The only thing I could find was at TSC It said on the jug for ford tractors manual transmissions 1939-1952 API Service GL-1 I assume this is what I want. At least I hope so.

Do not!use GL 5 . It is far too stickey and will
gum up your hydraulics-trust me. Use a green
mineral oil 80 weight if you can get it-it's getting tougher to find. If not use the current
hydraulic fluids which are lighter but are company
recommended. The GL stands for gear lube. Your
tractor has the hydraulic pump in this fluid.

Both GL-1 and GL-5 are mineral oils. The difference is what additives are included. GL-5 has additives that will harm the gears in the transmission.

Use the TSC Ford Transmission Oil. Ask Wal-mart if they can get the GL-1 it is on their product lists.

Get the GL 1 , it is what came in the tractor when new . The GL 5 has more additives that may not be compatible with he yellow metal parts inside your trans and hyd. pump.

I saw a similar discussion a couple of months ago, and searched all over and couldn't come up with any place that carried GL-1, even a Massey Ferguson dealer in northern Minnesota (he said that GL-1 hasn't been used since the late '30s or early '40s). So I went with the GL-5. My problem is I've got a poor seal at the axle hub and it runs through the hub onto the brake shoes on the right side. Trying the RTV blue gasket now... Anyway, I'm not saying the GL-5 is okay, but NAPA, Fleet Farm, Wal-mart, John Deere, Ace Hardware, and a Cat dealer all didn't have the GL-1. We'll see how the GL-5 works.
