I am replacing the oil seal and gasket on Main Drive behind the clutch release bearing on my TE20. Directly below it is the retainer assembly of the countershaft that is held in place by four studs. Should I remove this lower retainer and replace the gasket, or is this difficult to do and not worth the effort?

If its not leaking I would think its not worth bothering doing, just make sure the setscrews are tight.

Thanks John, I removed the studs thinking I would replace the gasket however, it appears the plate may be a problem to get loose. Therefore, I think I will replace the studs and do nothing to that area. Assuming nothing became loose while the studs have been out ( for the past three days ). I couldn't tell if that area was leaking but the seal on the front drive assembly was bad and needed replaced.

I doubt if anything will have happened to it Ray, as you say it can be troublesone to get off and if you are not really having problems, best left alone. You should be able to see some sort of marking on the front of the gearbox right under this plate if there has been a leak at all.If there are no marks you can safely assume that you dont have a leak. The other seal I suppose has done well if its the original one.

Hi Ray, Thought it would be too good to be true, that it wasn't leaking. Anyway, inside there is a taper roller bearing and the outer half (the cone) is holding that plate, no easy way to get it off other than firm leverage each side to get it to move. (I think we used to have a puller to do that) if you need a parts list to see what I mean mail me again.

I will work on it and see what happens. Since I have never done this procedure before (removing this plate) wanted to make sure there wasn't something I was missing. Thanks again for your help will let you know how things turn out. If you come across any additional suggestions let me know. Ray

John, finished it. Had to pry the cap off,was quite a job since there isn't much room in there. Took some time but was worth the effort. After cleaning it up and a little oil on several places the cap and new gasket went back on with little effort. Thanks again for your help I really appreciate it. Ray from Western Pennsylvania USA.

You are very welcome Ray. As I said in my earlier mail to you I am pretty certain we used to have a long puller for getting that off, can't remember using it that often though..Anyway glad you are mobile again....John
