TO30 sat through 2 hurricanes, now wont start.
The starter is fine, and will crank.
I Would like to see if there is spark. Can I pull off the spark plug wire, and put a 12 volt tester on it, or would the amperage blow out the tester?
If there is spark, should I drain the carb, and spray some engine starter in the air intake.
Any thoughts on debugging the problem?
Paul

first, made sure the fuel part of the equation was OK. Drained the carb, inspected the seperator bowl, checked the air filter for water, etc.
then checked the spark. Plugs were fouled, but no spark using the screwdriver test and even the plug against the frame test.
Checked the points, yes sparkage at the points, so finaly found a bad wire from the coil to the distributor cap. Cleaned it up, and that baby fired up. so happy, let it idel for 10 minutes, then proceded to get it stuck in a mud hole. HA

Lots of good advice. One tool I have found very helpful when checking for spark is a short (about 6 inches) connection with a light that fits the plug and coil wires. It has a boot on one end and a male insert on the other. Of course when hooked up, if you have spark, the light blinks very fast. Beats getting shocked. I bought two, just in case.... NAPA has them, and others too, and they are not expensive.

One question. Where does the hydraulic pressure come from for your loader? Is there a separate pump? I have a MF-35 diesel that had a loader adapted to it and it has a separate pump. I think I will scrap the loader as it is awful heavy for the tractor and I have access to my fathers. I still want hydraulics to run a tail gate on a manaure spreader.

Thanks

I run my loader from a stinger assembly on the front of the engine. The stinger fits into 4 holes on the front of the crankshaft and the stinger runs through the axle pivot pin to a hydraulic pump. Paul

Starting a gas engine is easy. Assuming there are no mechanical problems you need three things. First Spark. Second Fuel. Third Compression.

Lets say the compression is good and there is no water in the oil.

Check your fuel for water in the sediment bowl. Take it off because if it is full it will be deceiving. Be sure to drain the tank and carb of water if you find it in the bowl. Then add dry gas.

Check spark with a spare spark plug hanging against or set on the block under its own weight. ABSOLUTELY DO NOT USE A VOLTMETER - IT WILL KILL IT UNLESS IT IS A VERY GOOD BRAND and even then I have my doubts. If you hold it firmly against the block it probably won't zap you but I won't promise you that. Use some ether.

If you have wet spark plugs you will need to dry them.

Do not use WD-40 to dry the wires. Use silicone spray. The WD-40 will work fine but will evaporate and you can have the problem again. I silicone to get rid of water and keep it away. I use PB-Blaster to free rusted bolts and I use spray white lithium grease as a lubricant. WD-40 is great but it evaporates eventually and I just think the PB Blaster is better.

I do use WD40 when rebuilding engines. It will displace the water on the block after I wash it with soap and water and then if I let it sit for a few days it will evaporate. If I don't have the time I used the WD40 then use the good (like CRC Brand) Brake kleen to remove the WD40. The cheap brake cleaners leave a residue and some even have water in them.

good luck this weekend.

Best of Luck.

the suggestion about the wd-40 is the best idea for the moisture, but dont over look the contact faces they WILL corrode slightly in wet climate, I suggest take a piece of paper grocery sack and allow the points to close on the paper and CARFULLY pull out the paper. repeat this a few times then turn ign to on. use your finger to hold points open then let them snap shut a few times, you should see a small spark at the points. then reassemble then start engine. wish you luck w/the hurricanes.

One good thing about living in Ohio... no hurricanes. Sounds like Ivan might give you a break in Fla.
Do what Dan says about drying out your cap, distributor, etc. Around here, it is real common to spray WD40 on the ignition wires and the outside of the cap to chase water out of the ignition wires to get running again. Don't spray it on the inside of the cap or the points though.

Another way to check your spark is to pull a spark plug and clamp it to the block, or run aligator clips from the bottom of the plug to the block to get a good ground, then crank your engine. You should see a spark if she is working.
Don't know if you got any corrosion on your wires from all the rain. If you have the time, might not hurt to check your wiring to the coil and distributor to make sure you have good clean connections.

Ever got rain water in the air intake before? Don't know, hurricanes might do that, might check the oil in your air filter to make sure it's good.

Good luck!

Please, send this note to the guys at AgCo - what are we doing guys (and gals) - we have 50+ year old kit and we are surprised it won't start after 2 hurricanes. Durned unreasonable I call it :)

Is there another product currently being made out there that can boast this sort of reliability?

I doubt it.

Nice one Paul (FLA) hope you dry out soon.

Paul did the tractor get very wet from all the rain you had ,if so just take the top offthe distributor and take a look for any condensation under the cover if you dry it out with a hair dryer it will be ok ,as for testing at the plug wires just pull one off and jam a screw driver in and hold the handle with the metal close to the block you will know if the spark is good if it jumps and is nice and blue ,
good luck
Danny
