I would like to replace the crank shaft pulley seal in the governor assembly cover. Has anyone had any experience replacing that seal? What can I expect when removing the governor assembly cover?

Paul, I'm guessing your talking about a TO-20 or 30. I replaced that seal in my TO about a year ago.
You probably know this ...you gotta pull the front axle so you can get to the housing. You will probably need a puller to get the crank pulley off once you have removed the crank bolt. Penetrating oil and big cheater bars are a big help to get that far, take care with the crank pulley and bolt so you don't break them when you pull them.
Once you have all that done, the gov. housing just unbolts and pulls off.
That is a 2 part seal, a felt dust seal on the outside, then a normal oil seal pressed in the housing underneath the felt.
If I recall correctly, the oil seal is pressed in from the front of the housing. I managed to do the job without a shop press - used blocks of wood to support the housing, brass punch and hammer to get out the old one,a big socket and hammer to tap in the new one.(A press would be better if you got one). Install the felt dounut on top, re-install the gov. plate, shouldn't have to do anything with the governor itself, just line-up the housing and bolt it down.
You will want a new gov. plate gasket. When I pulled mine, the prev. owner used silicone gasket maker... it worked, but made a bit of a mess - the bolt holes where full of silicone and it had oozed around inside the cover... didn't look pretty, don't recommend that unless your desperate.
good luck.
