I was going to split the tractor soon to change my rear main, and change the clutch at the same time, but alas we had calls for snow, so I elected to postphone and stick my scraper blade back on. Good thing too, because we had a surprise snow dump here on the Eastern shore of VA. However while moving snow, the gears kept jamming on me. Combine this with near useless brakes and you can imagine my mess. Anyone have any idea on what was causing this? Is this because my clutch/pressure plate is too worn?

You know I was thinking, back in the Summer when I flushed and cleaned my hydralics, I also repaired the shifter stick. It was worn badly where the shaft contacts the shift gate or plate...whatever it is called. I had the shaft welded up and filed it to the shaft diameter. Was that a Kosher thing to do? Is that part of the shaft supposed to have some smaller diameter? After I did that the shifting did seem a bit harder this summer while I was tilling, but not like it is now in the cold of winter.

Hi Jerry...Cold weather does terrible things to already thick gear oil, making jamming a lot easier. In an automobile with 90w every shift must be smooth and deliberate until the machine is at operating temperature. I'm sure the clutch isn't helping matters, but if it's worn, it should actually make shifting easier. Try not to force anything so as not to bend shift forks. Good luck, have fun!!

DON'T SLAP IT BETWEEN GEARS! Shift it gently with square cornered motions. See a thread on the MF and MH list here about gear jambing.

Gerald,
I appreciatte the advice, but I do think I know better than to speed shift a tractor. The problem is real and aparently worse when the tractor is cold.

I thought I was gentle on my MF-135 but I got it locked in gear by shifting in a bit of a hurry. You are moving lots of parts, big heavy gears and once in motion they have lots of inertia. Its really easy to slip one side out of gear while pushing the shift lever against the gate and to slip the shift lever through the gate as the side being shifted scoots on by.

In your case the stiffnes could come from the need of the end of the shift lever being a sort of a spherical shape, not cylindrical and not necessarily as big as the shifter lever shaft. You may have to take the top off again and measure the slots in the gate and the shift rods and grind down your refattened shift lever to fit and to fit at the assorted angles it has all through the shift strokes.
