This is what one looks like installed on the back of the transmission. The picture is side ways to show better. Mark H.

Willy-N;

Are there any other pictures of the Howard available? If so, would you mind emailing them to me at . It's an interesting concept; I'd like to slow the ground speed down on my '52 TO-30, and this would be a good way to do it.

Thanks!
JWP

Hi Willy

Thanks for the picture...
Your pics are always clean and useful

I no longer have my TEA-20 but I still have
a Howard 4 foot rototiller manufactured in the 40"s and it still operates perfectly on my MF-50
and MF-135.

Thanks again for the pics

Joe Ferguson

When you use the Howard gearbox just make sure that the gears are fully engaged and not just halfway, they were notorious for doing that, the result is that the gears wear quite quickly on the leading edge and its almost impossible to get them now. Other than that they are great. The problem occurs with the gear selection when it is being fitted and if it is not lined up correctly on the back of the gearbox when they drill it.

There is also a main large brass bushing on the output shaft that can wear and cause the gear on the rear to angle under load and wear uneven. This should be checked for wobble befor it causes the gears to get out of line so bad that it breaks a tooth from miss alignment reason. The bushing in this one needs replaces do to some play. The 2 gears are showing uneven wear (common one that bust)and I need to find one or have a shop machine me one befor I sell it. The bushing is about 2 inches across right on the back where the shaft slips into the Howard going to the Rear End. It is still OK but won't be if left this way. Do you know of a place that sells them or am I stuck with having one made?? Mark H.

Its highly unlikely you will find one, I think you will have to get one made. Seems to be very few spares around for thees now, even here in UK they have all but dried up

I should also have said earlier that this Howard reduction box should not be used so you can pull more it was not made for that, it was actually made to hold the tractor back when you had a Rotovator on the back as they tend to push the tractor along if it can when it hits something hard like heavy ground.If you try to use it for pulling it will smash.
