RE my TO-20 that suddenly lost all oil pressure:

Thanks for your help so far. I did pull the pan. The oil line to the pump looks very solid, nothing loose.

I checked to see if the gear on the pump turns when the engine is cranked, it does.

I pulled out the pressure relief valve and and it appears ok. It slides easily up and down in the shaft. There was no washer under the spring as shown in the parts book. It always held 20psi, hot or cold.

If the pressure relief value were the problem for no pressure, would that mean it was in the down position? With a flashlight, I could look up into this hole and it looks clean, even shiny in places.

There does not appear to be crud in the engine or crankcase, but I guess it could be inside from previous lack of maintainence.

I thought I had checked the gauge, but maybe did it wrong. I disconnected the line at the block, and then ran the engine. No oil came out so I assumed no oil pressure. Is that right, or is the gauge activated by air pressure?

How could the pump fail catastrophically and still turn that front gear? Seems like it should pump something if the innards are turning, even if it could not hold the proper pressure.

Sorry for all the questions, but I can't figure out what is wrong.

There is the remote possibility that the gasket on the oil pump body cover may have sprung a leak.

Could be some crud blocking the oil line to the gauge inside the block. There should be oil coming out that fitting with no gauge connected. Try blowing air back in there. May take a fitting to the air hose to get pressure up enough to do anything.

RUN A PIPE CLEANER TRHU THAT HOLE AND TAKE THE OIL LINE OFF AND SHOOT SOME CARABERTOR CLEANER THRU IT. GOOD LUCK THE GAGE WORKS ON OIL PREASSURE NOT AIR PREASSURE.

check of the gauge and lines, look ok in reply to DAN IN IDAHO, 04-06-2005 09:47:54
I took the oil pressure gauge off, it registers immediately when an air pump is conected to it.

I disconnected the line at the block and at the gauge and I can blow air through this line...not too fast however as the line is small.

I connected a rubber hose to the fitting on the block and I can blow air into the engine.

Looks to me like all this stuff is ok

May be time to pull the pump and see if the key is sheared on the shaft for the drive gear or an internal gear. Sudden loss sounds like a failure like that rather than wear from the pump. Unless the intake pipe has sprung a leak and pulls air easier than oil.

Gerald...a follow up question on shear pin in reply to Gerald J., 04-06-2005 10:57:53
Thanks again for your continuing help.

If the shear pin broke, would the outside big pump gear that you can see still turn when the motor turns over? I ask because this gear does turn when the motor does.

Not unknown for outer gear to rotate whilst pump gears remain stationary. Pull the pump and look inside. Will probably need a kit to sort it.
good luck.

With pin or key sheared between the pump drive gear and the pump shaft, the gear turns but the shaft doesn't. When the shaft doesn't turn, the pump doesn't pump. This shouldn't happen unless there's metal been ingested into the pump.

Could even be a broken shaft inside the pump.
