Grease Leak

I"ve got a TO-30 at home that has a major grease leak. the leak is coming out of the joint where the two "halves" of the tractor come together, basically right under the seat. It very freely leaks the yellowish grease which we end up catching in a bucket so it doesn"t go all over the ground. Does anyone know what some of the causes might be? I don"t know if would even be possible to fix myself as it seems once the two halves are unbolted they would have to be separated some how. Does this sound like just a bad seal or something more serious? Thanks for the help and sorry for my lack of correct terminology!

Dave - what"s the condition of the transmission / hydraulic fluid? Does IT show the yellowish characteristics when you pull the dipstick -- right side of the tractor back/beneath seat area?

Yes, you are exactly correct with that description, almost looks like the yellowish hand soap you find in public restrooms. I'm guessing the tractor will have to be split in order to fix this problem. Does anyone know what's inside of there after you split it? Will parts come flying out or is it all pretty much held together?

The "grease" will be sludge out of the hydraulic and axle. The two halves must be slack for it to do that. it could be that you can just tighten the bolts up and it will be ok or it may have rubbed the gasket away with movement and it will have to be split and a new gasket fitted to cure it.
