Hey,
Has any of you tried that hot fire coil they sell here at the YT parts page? They call it the Pertronix ''Flame Thrower''. I was thinking of putting one of them on my TO30... especially after this recent bout with fouled plugs. It would be nice to have them burn cleaner, hotter and longer.

On the Z120 engine with delco distributor:
I first tried replacing the points with the pertronix point replacement module and kept the original coil. It ran very well after this but I can't say for sure if it was running any better than before. I am happy that I will not have to worry about points anymore and that is why I bought it. I then tried the pertronix coil and the engine would hardly run. I checked for spark and found it to be very strong. It would go about one inch through the air (further than my original). I believe the reason for the failure of this coil on my delco distributor could be due to cross firing inside the distributor cap. I intend to give the pertronix coil another chance when I have a new distributor cap and wires installed. I feel that there may be something wrong with the coil though since it should only put out as much voltage as is needed to fire the plug. This voltage would have been the same as with my old coil if no other changes were made, and no changes were made except the coil itself.

I have a Pertronix Electronic Ignition on my TO-30 with a stock coil and it really works well.Starts in a quarter turn and no points to futz with. But if you have a problem like loss of oil control, this system might help temporarily, but it won't cure the root cause. The hot coil will allow you to open the plug gaps further, but I haven't found anything lacking with just a stock coil. hope this helps.

Thanks for the input... I think at this point I am leaning that way towards the electronic ignition. Apparently the hot coil is best when used with the electronic ignition from what I gather... so it sounds like the electronics is the best choice even though it is not the cheapest. That makes sense too since the points are so whimpy these days, that they would just burn out fast with a hotter coil.

Never tried it..yet. Sent Pertonix an Email and they said the coil is capable of 40,000 volts, the stock original is about 25,000. So you could run wider gaps, which would keep plugs cleaner, due to higher volts. If you want the coil, why not get the electronic ignition system to go with it? Then you"ll get hotter, more consistent sparks. They say to use a 3 ohm coil for 4 cylinder engines.
Genessee products sells a complete kit with coil for these. I"m assuming you have a 12 volt system.

Hey Randy,
Wow! Thanks for the research, I didn't think about contacting them directly, I will look into that, I think they sell that electronic ignition at this site too... and yes, I do have a twelve volt system, I have also converted it to an alternator.

Hi Jerry. you're welcome. But I made a little mistake. It was Genessee I E-mailed directly, not Pertronix. They sell the Pertronix kit.
