I just drained the transmission fluid in my one day old (to me) TO-30. It had water in it, and when I took out the center drain plug it was full of gritty sludge. I felt around up in the sump and it was full of grit and sludge. I don't want to put in new gear lube if it needs to be cleaned out more. Where do I go from here?
Thanks, Mark.

Mark,
Defintely do the flush thing, per Jeff"s procedure. I did it last year and revivied my hydralics and lift, as advertised. It has been more than a year and it is still working fine.

Look in the archives. Jeff,OH has a proceedure for cleaning the sumps out. It's very common to have water in the trans/hydaulic fluid due to condensation and/or rain fall leaking in around the shifter boot. If the tractor isn't used much to heat the oil up, the condensation builts up and in winter can freeze and make the lift inoperative.

I just did the drain/flush/fill this last week including the pto seal. If you are going to flush, you will need to remove covers to get access and you will need the seals (which are available). I also removed the top cover on the transmission (I couldn"t find a seal so used the old one which was in good shape) to gain more access to the lower case. I used a pressure garden sprayer and 5 gallons of kerosene (diesel will probably work just as well). The hardest part was removing the PTO shaft. It is straight forward but if it is stuck as mine was, it took some finese.. If you have any questions, email me directly..

Here's a trick to remove a stuck PTO shaft, after you have removed the four bolts. Just hook a PTO implement shaft to it. The one on a post hold digger works great. Then get a big friend to play tug of war while you tap it lightly. It will pop right out.

look in the archives a few good mentions about washing out everything before you put new fluid in there, take your time and do it right the first time then you are set for a long time,if the pto seals are leaking now is the time to adress this also
good luck Danny

Thanks for all your advice everyone. I am going to have to split it when I have time this winter. For now I just drained the old fluid, poured kerosene through it and then refilled it. Waiting on a shop manual for further, much needed, repairs.
Thanks again, Mark.
