There are a couple of things I"ve used the ground PTO for.

First would be to power PTO driven hay rakes. The ground speed is just about right for those. If you put it in engine PTO it beats the heck outa the hay.

Second would be to back a post hole digger out when it"s stuck. You jack up one rear wheel and run the tractor in reverse to get the digger to spin backwards.

I"ve also seen it used to back up a plugged grain auger.

I"ve also used it to clear the last of the stuff out of a corn picker. When the wagon is full and I head for the barn, I put it in ground PTO. Then by the time I"m down the road a ways, the last of the ears of corn and leaves have worked their way out of the machine.

We use to put in ground speed then back the tractor up to push baler plugs back out. didn't work that good. I read about a guy who hitched an upsidedown to30 transimmision/rearend to a to30 tractors drawbar. by using a pto shaft and putting both in ground seed, he had a tandem tractor like setup.
he put a flatrack on the transimmison/rearend. speed would match.

Hey, I bet you could get some serious speed with that setup by shifting to neutral on the tractor and engaging engine PTO. That trailer would Push you pretty good!

Ground PTO works only when the wheels turn as it is driven from the main drive into the rear axle. This drives at one revolution of the PTO for 14" of forward travel (I think that was the distance) and it was used for driving side rakes and some used it for Fertiliser distributors, there were other machines but I forget what they were now as it is all so long ago. When it was introduced they made a big thing of it but I don't think it all happened the way they wanted it to as not many implements used it most of them preferring "Engine PTO" instead. They discontinued fitting it some time ago.

We've owned an early 135 with ground PTO from new. Despite using any number of implements, have never discovered a use for it. I think the idea at the time was to power trailer wheels, thereby keeping some semblance of parity between the various wheels rpm.

Hi Gerard, I knew there was something I had forgotten when I wrote that, but it was never meant for that it was only found to be useful for that later when it was in production, it was more for implement propulsion that they intended it for but nothing ever really happened as you know. It was sort of a damp squib if you know what I mean. Ferguson never had a powered trailer and didn't seem as though they wanted one either as they pushed the 3 tonner all the time. No doubt they will have some excuse for not having/needing one as it was an ideal opportunity.
