Help on TO-30 tranny and Sherman 3-sp gearbox

Howdy, all.
The engine from our recently purchased TO-30 is now at the machine shop, so with the engine off the tractor I'd like to do what I need to on the tranny and Sherman gearbox. All the tranny gears seem to run out fine, so I don't expect any real trouble there. However, the 3-sp Sherman only appears to have one speed. It won't shift up, down, or out, though the shifter moves pretty freely until it meets resistance. It certainly won't 'pop' into a higher or lower speed and stay there (and as best I can tell it's not popping into another speed then back out when I release.) Can y'all give any advice on what I should do next to determine the problem and fix it? I'm not new to wrenching on tractors, but I've never had to work on a Sherman before.

Thanks in advance, Darren

(I'll post this over on the Ford side, too, since they see a lot of these gearboxes.)

Darren,
check out those links Jim & I left right below yours on that rototiller post. That will get you started on John Smith's Sherman info.
With your engine out, that Sherman should be easy to unbolt and pull out of the bell housing.

George

George, I read that post-- thanks for the info. I'll be pulling the Sherman as soon as my wife and I get back from Nashville on Sunday. I'll post back once I know something. I certainly like the idea that it might just be fouled with rust and debris in the detents, forks, etc., but I'm not getting my hopes up just yet.

I think that John Smith is the expert. He hangs out on the "Ford 9N, 2N & 8N" Discussion Board (Not just "Ford") He also has a website.. easy to find. Search his name, 8n, Ford, Sherman etc. His email address is at his site also. Jim
