I searched the archives for discussions on mufflers on TE and TO's. I've tried mufflers from both local Tractor Supply and Orschlein. Both are incredably noisy. Without ear plugs, I'ld be deaf after one mowing. Surely there's an answer to this problem. I have a 48 TE20 and 50 TO20. I ended up using the original rusted up muffler that came on the TE and its quieted than any of the new ones I've tried. I thought about trying car mufflers, but the guy at the muffler shop didn't recommend it.
Anyone found an answer.??
TOM

Hi there.

Here is what I hear.

1. Horisontal pipe / muffler is more quiet than vertical ones.

2. Original MF mufflers are more quiet than aftermarket parts.

3. Vertical pipe / muffler is more prone to breaking than horisontal ones.

I bought one from this site, big mistake. The muffler was fine, but I still had to have pipe bent from manifold to muffler. Even after all of that, I couldn't get the flare right where it connects to the manifold.
Then I found a website that support 8n and ferguson tractors. The entire assembly was about $50 and the loudest thing on my fergie is the radiator fan.

Last time I needed a muffler, I went to the local MF dealer. They said they could sell me an OEM setup fir $120, or an aftermarket one for $40.

I went with the cheap one, and was really sorry. Next time I'm gonna buy the OEM on or have a muffler shop fabricate one for me.

I have a "50 TO20 that I replaced the muffler with one from Steven"s. I am very pleased with it. It is underslung (one piece that goes under the foot board) and is not loud.

Thanks.

J. C. Whitney has one that I really like. In their catalog no. 676J-07 it's listed as part no. 22UF2854B with 1 1/2" I. D. both ends or 22UF2855R with 1 3/4" I. D. both ends. Reversible: mounted in one direction it is quiet, reversed is EXTRA quiet; so quiet it made the other sounds of my tractor seem noisy. $25.99.

Bought the exhaust pipe, muffler and tailpipe from Country General for my TO-30. It was all one peice. This assembly would also fit the 9N,2N Fords.

I bought mine through my local John Deere dealer. Forgot what I paid for it but it was around 120.00 for pipe and muffler..Yes its made for a Ferguson (not JD) And its the type that goes up above the hood of the tractor instead of under the foot rests where it can set the weeds on fire from the heat...Works a treat !!
