Hi Guys!

My cows ate the alternator wiring on my TO-20 (12V) - I was wondering if anyone can direct me to a wiring diagram so that I can wire it back up? I know one wire goes from the key switch to the main terminal on the alt. And another wire goes from the opposite term on the key switch to one of the terms on the little plug-in connector on the alt. (whichh one though?!)- that leaves me with one wire from the main alt. term., and one wire from the allt. plug-in connector..... ..help!

Thanks,
Rich

You have 2 terminals on back of alternator, one large, one small? Large one goes to +ve battery terminal, small one goes to ign switch via warning bulb.

Thanks, Gerard,

But no- I have one main output term on the alternator, and a plastic connector that connects two wires to two little prongs on the alternator.

I think I've figured it out though:

Main term on alt goes to bateery (or starter or solenoid...)

One of the connections from the plastic connector is the field or "exciter"wire, which goes to ignition switch (same terminal as hot wire to coil)

And the other wire from the plastic connector goes the Battery/solenoid or can be wired directly back to the main output terminal on the alt. (It's the "sensing" wire)

I'm not sure which of the smaller wires is the field and which is thhe sensing- but the one that doesn't spark when touched to the main output term will be the sensing wire.

I think I've got it! Just posted this in case others need the info.

Any comments/suggestions still appreciated.

I found two webpages that can provide anyone with the basics of alternator wiring (very helpful to anyone who may be doing a 12V conversion...or whose cows have access to the tractor)
