Hi, I looking for information on a TO20 and how to prevent oil from getting on the rear break pads. The outer axel seals I've tried from a local supplier haven't worked. The shaft is not machine smooth, rough like a casting, and the rubber seal seams to let the oil leak past and onto the brake liner. Did the original seals have a felt type material for sealing? Many years ago I replaced the original ones and thought thats what type of material was. Is there a supply store you can recommend. gary

Sure Seals should cure that leak but the collar on the axle that the seal runs on needs to be smooth, obviously or it will wear away the lip on the seal. The seals should be running on the collar that holds the bearing in place not the actual axle-shaft, so you need to polish it up with some emery tape to get it smooth. The original seals did not have felt type material but there was a felt seal that was used to keep dust out of the brake drums, maybe that is what you are thinking of, I don't think this was fitted in production but as a Service repair for those that had problems.

That reply didn't come out quite as I intended, I got disturbed in the middle of doing it. I should have said that the shaft does need to be smooth or it will damage the lip of the seal and it will never seal. The Sure Seal usually works in cases like yours.

I replaced the axle seals twice thru the years with no luck. I used sure- seals three years ago and they are still holding. The area of the axle where the seal met was rough forging. I used a file and then emery cloth to dress the area. Worked great.

Thanks for feed back on the rear seal problem on our TO20. I'll give that filing and emery a try and let you know how that works. It may take a while to get it done and I'll order those Sure Seals soon. Gary
