I have a tractor that is missing the data plate up hehind the steering wheel and I am trying to find out exactly what I have. The info I have is as noted:
1) # in left side of steering col. cover 3537P

2) data plate revited on left side of engine block behind coil. Continintal engine, Detroit
# Z120 44344 ("48" TE20 ??)

3) one peice alum. shifter /steering cover and alum.tranny housing.

4 the aircleaner doesnt look like any other I have seen on fergies .normal oil bath but air inlet is apprix. 3"diam. and faces toward carb. right beside exhaust manifold. and the carberator seems backward from others, the governer rod is attached on outside of carb. and fuel inlet, choke, and idle adjust.is attached on inside between carb. and block. I think the Hood is off of a ford, it says ferguson on front but has vertical fins as opposed to horizontal as others.

any help will be appreciated.

The number on the side of the column will be just a casting number and no use to us. Having an aluminium transmission housing will make it a TE20. The engine numbers don"t connect with the tractor numbers as they were used in no particular order, just as they came to them in the pile. You can get some idea of the date of production if you look just forward of the round inspection covers on the side below the seat, there should be a series of numbers cast into the housing i.e 12 4 9 would be 12th April 1949, that is only the date of the casting and that would be used within about 3 or 4 weeks, thats about as near as you can get. The Hood does sound like one from a Ford 9N as you thought and the air cleaner seems very similar to the Ford type. If you have a digital camera perhaps you could send me the pictures and then maybe I will be able to recognise them. If you do please email to:- fergusontractors(at)tiscali.co.uk
The Ford Hood would have a "Ferguson System" badge on the front just like you say.
