Hi Guys, I am currently restoring my TEF20 and have heard so much about "Galvanic Action" eating away at dis-similiar metals. In the "old days", there was a product called "Titanine" that prevented this. Unfortunately, Titanine is, as far as I can find out, is no longer available. This must have popped up when you were restoring your machines. Do you know of a modern similiar product (as I don't want my tractor to end up as a pile of white dust!!)

Thanks
Eoin

Titanine is still available, look on Google.
The steering box is also subject to galvanic action too, remove the box and turn it over, remove the bottom plate and you may find it in there.

Hi Guys, Thanks for your replies.
Tractorsam:
I'm in Ireland. I plan on using this stuff on the bolts and faces of different metals. I will ask in my local autoparts. Thanks for the reply

DennisPinOhio / Gerard:
From what I know, the gear box has an aluminium housing whereas the rest of the machine is cast iron. I plan on using it where the iron bolts screw into the aluminium housing. I don't think it is a problem on the inside o the tractor as the oil acts as a protective barrier. (I am open to correction on this!!)

Thanks again for your interest.
Eoin

I used to have a TEF and know exactly what you're talking about. Which side of the pond are you on? Seeing as you have a TEF I imagine you're in the UK. I was told to use a product called Hylomar Blue (or Blue Hylomar). It is a gasket maker and available at most auto parts places. You can also ask anyone with an older land rover as they used a lot of aluminium components and suffer from similar troubles. Good luck, tractorsam

Not sure where on the tractor you are concerned about. If it"s between say, carbon steel and aluminum, I would try a search for McMaster-Carr. They have a huge online catalogue where I believe you"ll find a compound that is a preventative.
Let us know.

That, & cavitation corrosion is more of a problem for modern machines than older ones. Apart from a CI block & a brass rad, there"s not to many dissimilar metals to worry about. A good antifreeze that combines a corrosion inhibitor (guess they all do these days) will more than suffice.

ah - now I see. You had me confused - galvanic action occurs when two disimilar metals are connected in a conducting medium, thereby allowing a current to flow (bit like electroplating). Unless your tractor lives at the bottom of a river or similar, external galvanic action is likely to be almost non-existant. Straightforward corrosion of alloy is another matter. Paint alloy surfaces with a primer suitable for alloy to keep air away and make sure your battery is connected negative earth.
