After rewiring my TO-30 this winter, I'm left a bit confused about the wire connections on the generator. The tractor still has it's 6 volt positive ground system, which is working just fine. close inspecton revealed that the generator is not stock equipment. It's a Ford unit, probably off an old N. This being so, I can't figure out where the two wires that lead to the gen hook up. It has three terminals, two on the side, and one on the back end. Can anyone help? Thanks guys.

According to the Ford wiring diagram the terminal on the back of the Generator is the Armature and attaches to the D on the Regulator. Of the other two terminals, the F goes to the F on the Regulator and the G goes to ground. This is providing it still has the original type of Lucas Regulator with four terminals, D/E/A/F

The large stud at the back is the "ARMATURE" terminal. It connects to the "A", "ARM", or "GEN" terminal on the voltage regulator (labeling varies).

One of the little studs is NOT insulated from the case, and is a GROUND terminal, used to keep the gnerator case and the voltage regulator base at exactly the same electrical potential..

The other little stud, which IS insulated from the case is the FIELD terminal, and connects to the "F" or "FLD" terminal on the voltage regulator.

The wiring diagram in the Ferguson shop manual shows a wire to the armature, a wire to the field and a wire for the armature ground. Having said that the diagram of the generator itself shows it internally grounded.

You may have to go to the N Board and holler for Dell(WA) and tell him a fellow Boeing Engineer sent you! Dell's a EE and he can answer your questions.
