hi folks,
I've got an old Massey Harris 50 that's been parked outside pretty much forever. Anyway, the gear case and the hydraulic oil have all gotten full of water. I figure it's probably coming in down the shifter levers, and there is also a place in the back where the top link hooks up. Are there any other ways that I don't know about for water to get in there? and, where's the best place to get all of the rubber boots? the one back at the back where the top link connects,That one looks like a really special outfit.
thanks, Tom

The Rubber boots are available from a Sparex parts stockist, the part numbers are, for the Transmission lever S40821 and for the Draft Control Spring S41368. For the name of your nearest Sparex dealer, email:- sparex@sparex.com, don't forget to tell them your location. The adjustment for the Draft Spring is just take out any free play, no more. There is a breather on the top of the Hydraulic Cover under the seat on the left side, is that damaged at all, water could get in there too.

thanks John, I'm going to look at it pretty closely in a day or two as soon as it quits raining.

Best wishes, Tom

Hi Tom -

There is a fifth point for water entry - around the oil filler plug. The original paper gasket is usually long gone; we use silicone now.

And that rear boot can be a bugger to replace. Have you a Parts or shop manual? Shows the allen head locking screw, spring adjustment procedures.

We've changed about 8 on our fleet; the spring retaining rod ("control spring plunger") is usually siezed in the rear yoke casting. We hacksaw through the rod (through the gaps in the spring), then use heat to remove the threaded end of the rod. If the threads are ok, we weld it back together, if bad, buy a new one. Less than $20.

The threaded hole is packed with grease after assembly, to make the next change easier.

hi Jack,,

thanks, I'll look into that too.I've got a lot of work to do on the old tractor. And by the end of summer I hope to have a shed built. Here in the Pacific Northwest it rains mostly in the winter, but it's raining as I speak.

best wishes, Tom
