One of the problems I had with the TO20 was the governor didn’t work properly. When I took the front cover off I found that some of the balls were binding and thus had become stuck out. I have discovered that there is a very large washer behind the driver assembly. Looks like some kind of shim about 1/32 thick and probably 4” in diameter. Definitely not from this engine. I noticed in the parts manual that the fly weight type governor has a washer behind it but the ball type doesn’t show one. If I put the assembly on without the washer it works just fine. The washer is definitely causing the assembly to bind up but it is obviously not the correct one. Does anyone know if the ball type is supposed to have the washer behind it? I don’t see how a 3/64” washer could make that much difference in the operation of the governor. Thanks, Jack

All I can tell you is the TO20 that originally had a flyweight govenor that went bad and was replaced with the Novi ball govoner was supposed to have a washer behind the govenor. This carried a HF part # and my info is from the IT manual.
I don"t know if the tractor that originally had a ball govenor and it was replaced with another ball govoner if it needed a washer or not. Someone must know.

The book says the washer for the weight type governor is 57/64 x 1-3/8 x 3/64. They ought to have that at Wallyworld I would think. Crap! Thanks, Jack

Ah Ha! Got home and dug around in the parts drawers and found a washer that fits perfect. Had to enlarge the bore a little but it's within 3 thou. of being the right thickness. Discovered something. The base (cup) that fits against the cam shaft (that the balls ride in) is now free to turn on its own. The washer provides the clearance. So - I guess it does need the washer. Jack
