Generator output on TO-20

I just finished a major re-wiring project on my 1949 TO-20. Every wire on the tractor was replaced (using #10 to the generator as recommended), replaced the voltage regulator, solenoid, light switch, coil, spark plugs, rotor, cap, plug wires, points and condenser. Instead of using the shift switch to the starter, I prferred the solenoid switch, which I used. I left the system 6 volts with positive ground. I used #0 wire for battery cables and ran a #6 ground wire from the voltage regulator mounting bolt to where the ground battery cable contacted the frame. All is well with one slight annoyance. The generator will only charge about 10 amps. When I turn on the lights, the gauge will show about an 8 amp discharge. A voltage meter across the battery shows 7.5 volts without the lights on and 6.2 volts with the lights on and the engine running about 1500 rpm. Is it possible that the regulator needs adjusted? If so, how is this best done? Seems like I saw my grandpa do this 40 years ago, but it sure beats me how he did it. The generator and starter were both rebuilt. This tractor starts easier than my friend's TO-20 that has been converted to 12 volts!! Thanks for all the wisdom on this board. It has been a big help with this project..... ...GREG

GREG, Sounds like you are doing all the right things! Good work! I have done all those things myself & have a good starting & good charging 6V TO-20 also, even on those cold February mornings!

Now the bad news.... your generator is only rated for ~12A output, and that's at full throttle. If you add-up all your electric demand, with your lights ON, your probably around ~11A with 25W headlights. I have EXACTLY the same problem. I also have a rear work light. I can't run all three lights at the same time or I'm discharging the battery. I was having trouble discharging the battery with just the headlights unless I ran the engine at full speed.

You CAN adjust the output on your stock 3 brush generator to increase the amps a bit, that should get you to where you can run your headlights okay, as long as your not trying to run 50W bulbs. One of the generator brushes can be adjusted back & forth in the generator housing. Take the band off your generator and find the adjustable brush (has a slotted mount & hold down screw), adjust the brush... I don't recall which way now. The instructions for adjusting the genny output is not in the service manual, but it is in the original Fergy user manual. Make an adjustment, run your engine & watch your amps under load, if it's worse, you then adjust the brush the other way. There is no adjustment for the regulator to increase amps at full load, about all you can adjust on those is cut-in & out volts. You just need more power output from your generator.

That is my biggest complaint about my 6V system, I'd like to have super bright halogen lights to light-up the night, run a 12V sprayer pump, and install one of those whimsical 12V air horns that plays a tune... can't do that stuff with 6V.

George

Your generator output I believe is about 8 to 11 amps. You might also need a regulator to match your generator. Triodiode on EBay got me hooked up with windings, brushes and a matching regulator when I upgraded from 6 to 12 volts. If you want higher amperage output from your genny, you need a physically larger genny. Larger genny, more windings, more windings gives more output. I also am going to upgrade to a solenoid starter.
Unlike yours, my solenoid will be actuated by the shifter and powered by the key. Beyond that the rest is a secret until next year...

7.5 is a bit high, 6.5 is a bit low. Optimally it should be 7.2 volts for a full charged battery and the charging current should taper to zero.

Be sure your fan belt isn't slipping because of a glazed or worn belt or worn generator pulley. Any of those can limit the power from the generator. Is there a third brush in the generator? If so is it adjusted for the rated generator current which might be as much as 30 amps?

Is the voltage regulator rectangular or cylindrical? If cylindrical or small, its a simple cutout, not a voltage regulator.
