G'Day
I have a grey fergie (1948) that is stuck in gear. Is there a quick and easy fix for this problem?

regards

A very big thankyou to all those who replied to my e-mail. My little fergie is now operational again. The gears were slightly misaligned. The jimmy bar worked a treat.

Remove the two nuts that hold the gear lever in place and if you look inside you will see the selectors, one will be out of line. Press the Clutch pedal while you move this selector back into line with a small pry bar....John

Assuming the gears were free when it was parked the last time. And it was parked outside then you probably have a frozen clutch. I had this happen with my TO 20 several times and as I remember I took the bolts out of the steering column which gave me access to the clutch. I had a small pry bar that I slipped between the fly wheel and pressure plate. If this didn't free it I loosened the bolts. It wasn't an easy fix but when all else fails you do what you have to do. Anyway we overhauled the old family mule and replaced the clutch and it hasn't happened since.

Does the clutch work, or is the clutch inoperable? If the clutch is working, maybe the PTO is engaged and that is causing the bind. Disengage the PTO and try. If the clutch is inoperable, that is different problem. In that case, if you can start it in gear (bypass safety switch if present) sometimes you can drive it and pop the clutch and get it to pop free, or if you can put a plow on it drive it and drop the plow in the ground while pushing clutch and that may work.

My (very limited) experience is that if you rock the tractor back and forwards, while pushing in the clutch, it should come out again.
