Ford 601 sos

I just acquired a 601 sos tractor. Sometimes all gears work. Sometimes 5th and 6th don't do anything, (like being in neutral). Once in a while 7th, 8th will do the same thing. Sometimes a slight jiggle of the shifter will make the gear engage. Is there any hope for this transmission? Have ordered the manual for the sos but have not yet received it. Any help will be appreciated, especially if there is a small adjustment that might help.

It may have a bad overrun clutch inside the trans. This will show up in 5, 6, 9, 10 and R1.
My SOS on my 4000 diesel has the problem. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't.

Well I guess its not the end of the world then. Do we know if the overunning clutch is still available or is the transmission just junk. Don't mind fixing it if the part is available.

a 4000 does not have an overrunning clutch, however your 601 may if it's not been updated. 5,6,7,8 all failed are clutch 3 related. not too terribly difficult to fix, but may cost a little. Yes the trans is salvagable.

OOPS! shoulda looked b4 opening mouth. 1,3,5,7 are clutch 3. 5,6,7,8 are band 2. could be as simple as a band adjustment. could be a broken or missing pin in the 2 servo. neither of these difficult or expensive unless the band is broken. band 2 is mecahnically applied so it can't be too serious.

Took tractor out and bushhogged a little yesterday after screen was cleaned and fluid changed. Gears 1 thru 4 apparently always work. 5 & 6 act like they are taking hold and then let loose. 7 thru 10 seem to always work. R1 slips but r2 works fine. My manual still hasn't arrived at my doorstep. Tractor is a 671. Still think there's hope

Billy,
As the saying goes, there ain't any small adjustments, and certainly none you'd want to try without the manual, fer sure. Wait until you get the manual, I don't even have enough time to tell you where and how to check the oil in the SOS.

Good luck.

Mike
