I just noticed a note in my operators manual (Ford 4000 - 3 cylinder)mentioning 2 filters for the hydraulic oil. Service manual shows suction and return filters which I believe are located inside the rear end housing. There is no mention of method or frequency of changing them. Do I need to pull the lift cover to get to these? And secondly - should I? Thanks for the help, Bill

Bill, The 4000 has a both a suction strainer and a return oil filter. Ford's recommendation was to replace them only if the tractor was disassembled for repair. Access is by removing the hydraulic lift cover.

Should they be replaced? It depends on how much contamination has gotten into the hydraulic oil. The return filter will simply bypass oil if it's plugged up; the suction strainer can collapse and block flow to the hydraulic pump and cause it to fail. Possible sources of contamination are - material worn off brakes
- dirt introduced at rear remote quick couplers. If equipped. - dust that sticks to hydraulic cylinder rods and gets past the wiper seals (e.g. front loaders)
- packing material off some types of loader cylinder pistons.
