I know I had seen this problem posted before but I can't find it (and the associated replys) and at the time it didn't apply, now it does. My engine will start but after about a minute it shuts down UNLESS I loosen the the timing window port on the injector pump. I did a quick check on the return lines and they seem clear, but I'm open to suggestions.

Never heard of a Simmons pump. Have a Simms on my 6000. The tractor in question in this thread has a Roosa Master, now known as Stanadyne.

As CC says, you have pressure building up in the pump. If you're sure the return line is not plugged, then it is likely the governor ring has self destructed, and is plugging the pump return. It is a common failure on the Roosa Master pump. I got my education on these with my 871D. I bought a gasket kit for about $20.00, and took it apart to fix it. If you're mechanically inclined, take it apart and replace the governor ring. Make sure you keep the parts SPOTLESSLY clean when you reassemble it. Take lots of pics so you remember how to put it back together.

I"ve had the same problem on other makes of tractors/engines and it is usually the elastic/rubber goveror weight retainer in the injection pump. It"s breaking up into pieces and plugging the return circuits. Once pressure in the pump body builds up to be equal with the transfer pump pressure, no fuel is pumped. Opening the timing window relieves the case pressure and lets fuel flow. Unplugging the return line will only help temporarily. Pump can be fixed without a total rebuild if you can find someone to do it. Most shop only completely rebuild or exchange pumps.

If your injector pump is a Simmons look and see if it has a small round dome shaped cap with a nut or screw on top to hold it on.Take it off and there should be a wire mesh filter in it.Clean it good with gas or carb cleaner.Mine was running for a minute and quit. All the mechanics said your sucking air somewhere when actually it wasn't getting enough air because of the stopped up filter.Good luck.

restricted flow somewhere, either supply or return.
