I recently purchased this tractor and it had been starting fine. Before this week's storm I tried to start it and the solenoid smoked. Checked the wiring to it and all nuts on it were loose. This was a 3 post solenoid but I replaced it with a 4 post (was told that by connecting the small "I" and "S" posts, it would work like the 3 post). But now all I get is a rapid "clicking" at the first attempt to start it, and then nothing at all. The 6V batteries are fine. The electrical system is reverse polarity. Did I goof up by substituting this solenoid? Any suggestions?

Dan,
I fitted a four post solenoid to my Major. One of the small leads comes from the switch to one small post on the solenoid, the other small solenoid post goes to earth. On a three post solenoid the end of the operating coil is earthed to the case. The four post ones have both power in and earth insulated from the case and so require an earth.
I have a new four post in my hand at the moment and cannot see any marings as you describe. (I and S).
Check all connections at battery, earth and solenoid before changing anything in case your solenoid is different to mine though.
regards

Brian
